As some of you know I finally got my cd player installed. Now I want to start on a good system. I'm wondering is it possible to install subs without an amp?
I'm looking at getting a sony xplod subwoofer to go with my xplod cd player. I want to add some good bass. I'm planning on getting an amp eventually but would like to get a sub first. Hopefully its possible to hook up a sub without an amp.
As far as being possible, yes it is. Is it advisable? No. A HU amp is not suited for such use. Not enough power. It defeats the purpose of having a sub. It would hardly be audible. Your sub wouldn't be worth having for all the good it would do. And, even if you did this you would have to have some type of low pass filter to keep everything but low frequencies out of the sub. You don't want to send a full range of frequencies to a sub.
yes and no, u can if you get a sub that has an installed amp on it... besides that no because u wont get enough power to drive a sub, you prolly wont even hear any music out of it much less burning the sub out with the high frequencies
And you risk hurting the HU. It's not adviseable by anybody. I'd deffinately at least get a cheap amp from Walmart to run it. I would have some things to say about (e)xplode, but to each their own.
My Pioneer HU has the option of setting the rear two channels to run as subwoofers, but I wouldn't do it. At 23W RMS each channel, that would be just enough power to the subs to make them do nothing.
And the sub's voice coils would probably fry while you were doing it. And it wouldn't even be putting out the 23 watts RMS either, because that's it's top continuous power, so it would be putting out probably 17 or so. Simple answer: get an amp.
