Post Confused about vacum

I have a 92 7.3 non turbo F250
To begin about a month ago my brake booster went out(i think), still havn't replaced it. But at the same time I had problems with my A/C and got info on previos posts. I found a very small vacum line with a hole. and another vacum line that connected to A/C didnt seem to hace any vacum either. Could the problem be the line or is the (what I call) vacum booster located under the alternator not working. Is there an easy way to check with out expensive equipment. Could this be connected to the brake booster problem.

The thing under the alt is a vaccum pump, yes it does drive the brake booster and a/c heat controls. easy way to check to see if it works would be fallow the ruber line from the pump up to the tee disconect it, start the engine a and put yur thumb on the end of the hose and see if you feel suction. and visualy check the hoses for wear holes, on mine i found the line that goes to the booster had a big wear hole from the back of the air cleaner

Well the most inexpensive way to check to see if the vacuum pump is working is take of the main line and stick your thumb over it. If it's got good suction then it's probably good and you will need to track down where your getting a leak. Since you think the brake booster is bad (i'm guessing hard brake pedal tells you this) take the vacuum line off of it and put your thumb over it. If its got good suction going to it it is probably leaking in the booster. You could keep it plugged and check your a/c lines if they work now. A leak in the brake booster can affect the rest as can a leak somewhere else in the line affect the booster.

I had one small line off of a cruise control unit I installed and my power brakes were almost non-existent. I practically had to stand on the brake with both feet to get it to stop. So it seems that even a small vacuum leak will cause a hard brake pedal.

if your booster is bad, it may be exhausting all your vacuum. possibly changing the booster will fix all the problem. best of luck Phil
