Timing questions
Got a few questions here concerning my truck. I got the 79 f250 4x4 and have been doin alot of work to get it out and about and lookin good. It was a beat to heck farm truck when I got it. It has a 460 that was put in it. I ran the casting numbers off the block and it said that it was a 73 outta a Lincoln. Patients have wore thin now and even tho the body work ain't yet done, I wanna get it out and drive it(funny how the redneck in a guy come creepin out when he gets himself a ford 4x4 to play with). It was runnin real rich so I took to rebuilding the edelbrock 1405 carb. OK, did that and now it still wants to burn a bit rich, foul out plugs, backfire and not idle for crap. I replaced the plugs, wires, rotor and cap, still does it. I thought I would check the timing. ok, found the hash marks on it, or what I think they are. Funny thing is that it runs best in a totally different spot then the hash marks. Dad says that the timing chain musta skiped a tooth. I bought a new chain for it, and then I heard someone sayin something about retarded, and a few dagrees off,,, what is all this?,, Anyone help me here? I'm no mechanic, more of a tweeker but I gotta tell ya, ain't got the $75 an hour a decent mechanic wants to tell me to replace this part and see if that fixes it,, ya know? OK, thanks

There is not to much to go wrong in that 1405. I assume you have the mechanical choke all set up correctly and you are operating it properly.

This frequently happens when the harmonic balancer ring slips. Get your manual out and find TDC by observing the piston motion. Compare the TDC found with the TDC marked on the isolator. If the engine runs good with the timing set way off the ring failure is probably the cause. Fix this fast, when a ring comes off it can wipe out your engine bad. There is a rubber compound between the parts of the harmonic balancer that gets old and cracks.

If the moter is original it may have a plastic covered timing gear that is notorious for failure. When you replace the timing set get a straight up aftermarket timing set. Replacing the timing set is not exactly "cheap" insurance against failure but it is reasonable:-)
This "fixes" a 400, but I am not sure where the changes were made in the cam timing in a 460. The guys in the 460 engine forum can answer that question.

Understood:-) -That is why a service manual is a great investment. The best $$ you can spend. I buy Haynes, Chilton's, and OEM (if I can get it) for every vehicle I own. There is different info in each type of manual.
