i have a 1975 F-100 4x4 witha 352 big block outta a galaxy. when in drive the oil light comes on only while idleing. in park teh light stays off. whats up with it? thanks
In park the idle is higher because it is not under a load. The oil pressure is low when it is in drive because the bearings are most likely worn and when the truck is under a load it may just have the idle low enough so the oil pressure is low. Id say the bearings are worn. Good luck!
Either the sending unit is going bad(unlikely) or your engine is just tired and worn out. 15lbs is the recommended lowest oil pressure at an idle. Any less any you are probably metal to metal at the crankshaft somewhere. It will live for a while at 5lbs idling but not forever. This will also wear parts like cams, lifters, rockers and what bearings are left. You can try running 20W50 motor oil, this may prolong the inevitable.
