I have just ran my rebuilt 302 for the first time and have a problem. After the motor runs a short while the temp gauge peaks all the way up. I have a new thermostat and water pump. I have heat blowing in the cab and all the radiator/water pump hoses are hot except the very bottom radiator hose, which is cold. I dont believe the coolant is circulating as it should. Any ideas as to what could cause this?
I'm wondering if you might have gotten the wrong water pump. The pump for a serpentine belt drive rotates in the reverse direction from a v-belt driven pump. The hub is supposed to be different so that the pullys won't interchange, but I wouldn't rely on that.
Another possibilty is that the thermostat, even though new, isn't opening. You could take it out and check it in a pot of water on the stove.
