I have a 2000 Navigator with the trailer tow package, including the 7-point plug by the hitch receiver. It also has the adapter with the 4-point trailer plug. Been towing my boat with this since it was new, and the lights work fine.
I just recently purchased a logo light that goes in the hitch receiver. The light has two leads on it. I plugged one lead into the ground pin in the recepticle, and the other into the trailer brake pin. When I apply the brakes, the light does nothing. If I move the red lead to either the left turn/brake light lead, or the right turn/brake light lead, the light works fine. I would really like the light to come on only when I hit the brakes, and not blink along with the left or right blinker, so I assumed that the trailer brake pin would be hot when the brakes are hit.
What am I missing here? Is there something I need to do to activate the trailer brake pin?
Unless you have a brake controller installed, you won't have any power to the brake pin on the 7-pole connector. Sounds like you need a lighted receiver cover that has a "logic" board to eliminate your problem.
Where would this "brake controller" be installed? I'm not going to get one just for the logo light, but I'm guessing there is a way to jump the wires to make that one lead hot when the brakes are depressed.
If that Nav has the connector (white or gray 6-pin, 3 over 3 with only 5 wires used) under the dash, you could hook the wire from the brake light switch to the heavy blue wire and have power to the 7-pole's brake pin when stopping. The other wires are 12V, ground, and panel lights.
He'd still have the same problem, 'cause the brake and turn signal functions are combined in 1 wire. Plus, he can damage the electrical system if he has the Lights Out Advisory Panel.
