Batt lite on, Fusible link blown '89 F-150
I searched the forums for likely posts but found none specifically addressing this problem. If you know of any, please redirect me.
I have an '89 Bronco 302. THe battery light came on and a burning smell was detected . Checked running volts and its 12.5 (prob batt volts only, alternator prob not charging). Pulled alt and spun pulley easily, no resistance.
(this is the internal regulator, external fan alternator.)
Ran to store and put in reman Motorcraft alt (free, old one on warranty from NAPA).
Start up - still no charge.
Then... checked starter relay terminal and found a blown fusible link (green, 14GA). Shoulda checked it first. I can start the car OK, and it runs on battery power. Just wont charge.
So:
1. Did I change out a good alternator?
2. What could cause the fuse link to blow?
3 How do I replace the Fuse link? (ive read its a splice/solder/wrap job)
4. Should I look for other causes of the blown link before replacing?
Thanks,
-Chris

No nothing unusual. I replaced the fuse link that was connected to the pos terminal of the starter relay today. It was fed by 3 wires from the harness. Didnt have the proper crimp connection so used a house wire connector nut to hook em all together until I can get it done properly. Charges normally now.
But I noticed a coolant leak after I got done. A sneaky one. From behind the water pump? Time for a new Expediton? I think so.
Ill relegate this Bronco to trips to the back roads of the Sierras. Can't sell it for anything.
