390 running problem

I have a 390 with newly reconditioned heads, new timing chain & sprockets, Holley 4 barrel, will idle @ 1000rpm, timing set 12btc, engine stalls when shifted into rev or drive. Often backfires with flame from carb. Any ideas?

Where do you have the vacuum advance plugged? Pull the vacuum hose off the distributor, plug it, and then set the timing.

Also try dropping the idle to 800 rpm. You don't have a four cylinder there.

timing? carb adjustments? My 390 was backfiring and it was the timing. set mine to 10 tdc with idle at 700. I also corrected allot of carb problems once I changed from a holley to a Edelbrock.

could be the distributor is a tooth off. Rmove the dist. and move rotor slightly to right or left and see if it improves. This happened to me and moving the dist. over a tooth, helped with backfiring through the carb.

Set the engine at tdc on compression stroke, pull the distributor cap and look at where the rotor is pointing. Should be aiming right at the #1 spark plug tower on the cap.

guys the timing is fine. its not 180 off. he just needs to set it to 8 btdc which can be done by just turning it counter clockwise. no need to pull the dizzy.
