Hey guys,I have an 88 f150 4.9l 5spd..this is my last emissions test and i keep failing with the NO2.ihave anew converter,O2 sensor, egr valve is working properly....the old girl does not burn a drop of oil,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the only constant problem is when it is cold it idles eraticly until the temp starts to come up then it evens out and runs fine.any help would be great!!
Try adding methanol to your fuel.....up to 10% that will clean it up. If you can't find a supplier you can buy a product from Chevron called "Ban-Ice" or "Heet" from Pep Boys...They are both 100% methanol
NOx is produced when combustion temps are too high. The egr system was designed to compensate for this. The valve may be working but I've seen egr ports completely plugged with carbon from the exhaust gases. Pull the valve and make sure the passages are open. Also combustiont temps increase with advanced timing. You could try backing the initial timing off for the test. Leaner mixtures burn hotter so they tend to produce more NOx.
I don't belive any catalitic converter has been invented to deal with NOx emissions. So the problem is probably not the converter.

I moved your post to the 87-96 forum. These guys will be able to help you a bit more. Also, as the leader of the Ontario chapter I invite you to come down and check it out. We are located at the VERY bottom of the chapter list on the main forum screen.
hey i just passed emmissions with same truck not too long ago had to add a gallon of methyl hydrate and change the thermostat to a colder high flow stat and she passed
thanks guys ...i tore the intake and exhaust manifolds off today took the intake to the car wash then finished with cleaner,i found i had some serious leaks from the gaskets and egr tube man there must have been 5lbs of carbon and crap in there!!!i`m going to retard the timing a little and pop that tube off the air cleaner ....i`ll post a pass or fail,THANKS ps.it is very hard to find methanol around here co-op used to sell it but they are out of the fuel end of things (ontario canada)
