Well I've been chilling here, watching a little coverage. I actually started to listen to Art Bell, just can't sleep. Well Art comes back from a break and tells everyone that the news anchor and weather man on CNN just got into a fight because the weatherman could not get in a word edgewise. Man I wish I could have seen that
You know whats funny though, these anchors and reporters all think they are meteorologist. They start with their "we were just looking at the radar and you can see everything starting to... and it should move..." Then they bring in someone from the National Weather Service, NOAA or one of those major meteorological centers and contradict everything the anchor/ reporter just said. This is the best entertainment on tv, you can't make this stuff up
The on site reporting (TV and print) usually is pathetic - those people think what they see is the only thing of significance happening, and most seem to lack a basic understanding of hurricanes.
One odd thing I've seen in the past is that the pay weather services (not the Weather Channel, but firms like Accuweather) tend to say things that contradict the federal weather people. I did not pay much attention to that until I read the pay weather services want to limit what the federal agencies provide the public, and has enlisted the aid of some Congressmen to do so.
A little bit of good news. By being on the west side of the eye, New Orleans has dodged the worst of the storm. Also, they state a dry front from the west came in quicker than expected and reduced the severity of the hurricane. Not a lot of good news, but every little bit helps.
Unfortunately it looks like Biloxi is on the east side of the eye and will get the brunt of the storm.
Just came back from the fuel station I frequent in southeast Michigan. They were told at 3:00 am, that effective midnight tonight, they will be placed on a 1,000 gallon per day allocation due to supply disruptions from the hurricane. They typically sell 1,000 gallons of fuel in their first hour of business. I sure hope everyone will be safe down there! Looks like this one will affect us all.

I forget the name of him, but the Congressmen you're talking about is from PA, (and for some reason I thinks he's from SE PA) but the private sector, mainly Accuweather (from PA, duh) want the NWS (national weather service) to stop providing FREE regular forcasts thats easy for the general public to read(Okay, thats understandable cause thats their business) but also stop providing free raw data (that a lot of researchers, like my professors use) to anyone except them. So basically, all the research done by NOAA and the NWS could only be seen by the Accuweather.

What a crock!
Thats because global warming is a "myth" and who needs the average person looking at weather data that they are far too stupid to understand, "Don't worry little chickens.......We'll tell you when the sky is falling!"
Well, really its off the road again... I'm back home, storm didnt mess things up *** bad as we thought. a few trees down, electricitcy is out everywheres but here (the president of the electric company lives in the subdivision) On the way home DeRidder-New Roads, i saw national guard or something, 18wheelers with dump trucks and front end loaders on them, then i saw some FEMA (They drive excursions brand new to ) with suppiles on 18wheelers and about 4 tourbusses full of somethin donno if it was people or supplies. and then i saw all the entergy trucks yall sent. there was about 35-40 bucket trucks (ford F-big50's) and they were waiting in the win-dixie parking lot and electric company lot last night and today waiting for the okay to go baton rouge and new orleans.

Welcome back, JG. Glad you made it back alright. I hope they can get things back to normal soon. How did your engine make it? Did you bring me any toys?
My boss is waiting for the order from the Red Cross for the 100 or so tons of ice to be sent to LA and Miss.. The last hurricane they ordered early, but it wasn't that bad. This ones a hell of a lot worse and we haven't heard from em. Go figure.
Just heard that they've ordered the entire city of New Orleans to be evacuated, due to the broken levees and inoperable pumps. Here's the scary part (my hypothesis): Katrina is moving north, pretty much following the Mississippi River. As it dumps inches of rain per hour over those areas (they're forcasting 2-4 inches of rain HERE tomorrow, in Western New York), it all eventually flows into that river. Which means it flows into New Orleans over the next week or two. If they don't get those pumps working and fix those levees, New Orleans will become a memory. My prayers are with you all.
Got word from home telling me that my house and the rest of my families that live in the area is alright. Cant reach anyone via telephone as of right now. My wifes grandfather who lives in old Metairie and her cousin who stayed home in Bay St. Louis are unaccounted for. As of right now we dont know when we will be able to get back home as both of our routes are closed until further notice. It is amazing how a little rain and wind can alter your life. When we are able to return home we will be going back to no jobs and we came out on the sweet end of the deal. I will continue to pray for everyone who has lost someone in this mess, and for those who have lost their homes and their lives.
yea i think that people are taking advantage of this disaster and going out and stealing things are totally horrible twisted people. the mayor of the state (forgot his name) looked and acted really mad last night and i wouldnt blaim him. i just dont think the people have any sense of the people that are suffering adn then they go out and loot. and i lost a truck in that hurricane but better a truck than a person. i hope the dude above is watching over them
