So I got some badger pistons from TMI (my supply gods) and took them to my machine shop that is owned by a clever old gentleman who knows his stuff. He was amazed that there were flat tops for the 400 still around and wanted to find a supplier. When he checked the part number he was dumbfounded as it either didn't exist or was definitely (according to his knowledge) not a badger number. So he did some research and was convinced that I do not have a badger piston and, maybe i dont per se given the company history stated below.
Badger Pistons, LLC was formed with the acquisition of the piston manufacturing plant and the remaining piston inventory of Dynagear Corporation in February of 2003. Dynagear had manufactured Badger pistons since its acquisition of Manley-Badger in 1995 from Kolbenschmidt. Shortly after Dynagear acquired Ertel Manufacturing Company in 1998, all piston production was consolidated at the New Albany, Mississippi location.
So maybe I have a badger piston set made by dynagear. Same thing - no difference. Just wanted to let you know in case you run into the same thing someday. And I found it interesting.
Thanks Maples..I've read it a few times but still enjoy it. I'll be doing most of that stuff. Having to comprimise. My real motor will be when I use their offerings plus propane. Waiting for the $$ to do it.
I've been looking at the propane conversion kits, if I could afford it all, I'd convert the 351M in my truck to run on it, burns so much cleaner, makes the engine last longer.
About time are 400's get some press. If built right they can be real torque monsters. If built for low rpm (below 3000rpm) they make comparable hp/tq to a 429/460, but weigh alot less (about 150lbs). everylittle bit counts.thanx
