Squeak when A/C engaged.

Instead of just rolling my windows down today, I turned the A/C on and I started to hear a loud squeak. I turned it off and drove for a little while. Turned it on again and it was quiet for around 30 seconds, then that stupid squeaking started again.

What could be making this squeaking sound? The belt? I dont want to have my A\C on and my truck sounding like an old POS. It can look like an old POS but it cant sound like one!

Does it sound like a belt squeel? We had a dodge caravan do the same thing when the compressor was locked up and the clutch on the compressor was engaging. Ended up toastin the clutch on the compressor. Make sure that compressor aint lockin up on ya.

Yea, just like a belt squeek. How can I see if the compressor is locking up?

How long (how many miles)has the serpentine belt been on the truck? Is the engine leaking oils from anywhere. Old belts and oil on the belt will cause problems. If the belt looks ragged, is very shiny, or has dry-rot cracks in it, maybe it is time for a new one. I would save the old belt under the seat also, just in case the compressor is ready to die, a seized compressor may damge the new belt if you decide to get one.
I am not sure how to determine if your compressor is seizing, but if the AC has been maintained and it is blowing cold immediately, that is a good sign the compressor is running well.

Well, I talked to my dad..and he said it was probably the compressor. I rarerly use the A/C, so that might be why. I noticed cold air wasnt coming out...we gonna check it out tomorrow.

On that dodge I was talking about, It didnt sieze up instantly. When the a/c was turned on, it the clutch would kick in and the compressor would turn but you could tell it didnt want to at all. It turned slower than the belt and was locking up from time to time, and then releasing and turning again. Then it just finally locked up and that was the name of that tune!
