I need some help in getting started putting together a rebuilt 302 to put in a 56 F-100. First the engine is a rebuilt still sitting in the crate that I purchased on ebay. I don't have any parts from a donor engine, yet. The engine was intended to go into an 89 F-150. So now, I need to purchase eveything to put it together. My intention is to use a carberator/intake system. Just looking for some suggestions as to which route to take (ie distribtor, carberator, intake manifold, etc) I'd like to put a serpintine belt system; however, the chrome ones are a little out of reach right now (maybe in the future). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
What's your budget for this? How wild do you want to go? What cam do you have in the motor? If it's not a cam that would be suitable for truck, this would be a good time to change it. It may be a new cam, but if it's a cam for a Mustang or something like that, you wouldn't be happy with it in your application.
For a carbed truck I would suggest a dual-plane intake manifold, (there are a ton of them out there, you can always count on Edelbrock for some good ones) and I've always been partial to Holley carbs, mostly because I know my way around them better than the Edelbrock/Carter AFB. I'd suggest an 1850, which is a vacuum secondary 600 CFM.
Long-tube headers for bottom end.
Ignition? So many choices. MSD, Mallory, Accel, DUI...take your pick. I'd probably go with a complete MSD system.
You can always do some junkyard scrounging for your serpentine belt setup, and paint the pulleys whatever color you like. I've found that the typical cheesy aluminum rattle-can paint, when allowed to cure can be burnished with a rag and super fine steel wool into a decent looking finish, sort of looks like silver powdercoat.

The individual who I bought the motor from purchased it through Autozone for his 89 F-100 PU. So right now the engine is a plain rebuilt stock engine. My budget is between $500-$1000. This is my second rebuild project, years ago (11 to be exact) I rebuilt a 68 Chevy Step Side PU with a 350/Turbo 350 combo. I was always jealous of 53-56 F-100s. So, I had an opportunity a year ago to purchase 2 x 56 F-100s (needed 2 to make 1) for $700 and I did.
Now, I'm knee deep in the slow moving project. I picked the best frame and stipped it down. I've had a TCI MII front end and a 4-link setup with a 91 Ford Explorer rearend installed. So now, I need to build the engine up so I can see where we need to place the engine mounts.
I'd say some swap meet/flea market scrounging is in order. You can eat up $500-1000 in a hurry with brand new parts. I've always been good at scrounging stuff and making do on a tight budget.
Oh, and we don't mention the dreaded "C" word here...some of us may own them, or have in the past, but we don't admit to it in public!
Sounds like a fun project. I've always liked the mid-50s F-100s, but lately I've been thinking about an F-1 as place to put my 351C.
Im an edelbrock guy, that said, the performer RPM is a little bit better numbers wise down low.... and the Weiand Stealth is a little bit better performer up high, although they are VERY close and both great intakes.
Go for a good low end torque 4x4 type cam..... spend the bone and a half on this, or youll be disappointed...
Heads Heads Heads, this part of your build if you can afford it is what I would consider spending a lot of money on.... do some research, maybe something to bump the CR to 9.5:1 or so.....
I am building a '68 302 with .040" over pistons to a 308 cid,
schndeer cam 194/204 duturation at .50 with a 108 lobe seperation angle and a 111.intake centerline, .266" intake lift and .280" cam lift, that comes out to.452, .476" valve lift with 1.7:1 rockers. 1.6:1 is stock on a 302, longer rockers will increase ramp rate; how fast the valves open.
Stock 302 4v heads with 1.94"/ 1.6" valves, 1.78/1.45 are stock, I am aiming for a 9.5:1 compression so I can get away with 91 octane, I hope 100% Ethanol becomes more avable because I understand it is 113 octane and cost less than regular.

Edlebrock performer RPM intake with a holley 450 cfm vacume secondaries I will rebuild one with center hung float bowls and a vent tube and re jet it for offorad.
I will ruen a malory points distributer with mabe a 50,000 volt coil
on my desktop dyno this comes out to207 hp and 435lbs of torque at 2500 rpm and 341 lbs of torque and 357 hp at 5500 rpm.
this is going in a little 2800 lbs scout with a 4 speed 4.26 1st gear, 3.50 gears and 33" tires,
on my desk top dyno the gains were small after 450, and it said that I would have 357 hp with a holley 450. Holley 450 have been around for a long time I can get several holley 450 and 390s from my uncles friend probably for free since my uncle gave them away to this guy for free and he does not want them. I can use the money I save from getting them for free and build one ou great, I am looking at vacume secondaries, center hung float bowls not stock holley but can be done, vent tube connecting the float bowls, jet it well,
the truck avenger uses the side hung float bowls which can not be better than center hung, has a vent tube I can fabricate that, I do not see what else is so much better... I do not want to spend $300 + on a carb.
No, not a big deal to swap center hung bowls on. They require dual feed lines, so you won't need to use the crossover tube. It installs on the float bowls anyway. No metering block on the secondary side, so you have to use the appropriate feed line since they are longer for a double pumper that has the secondary metering block.
I have center hung bowls on the 600 that's on my 351C, it wasn't a hard swap at all.
Still, I think you'd be happier with a 600 cfm. The list number is 1850, they're easy to find at swap meets and flea markets.
Having said that, the 450 may give you all you need in that Scout. Worth a try, you can always upgrade later if you stumble across a 600 that's affordable.
Be careful. It sounds like you know what you are doing, but the 450 carb might be one tuned special for a dual tunnel ram set-up. So you may definitely need to reconfigure the jets and power valves. It may have a 4 corner idle system too if it was part of a tunnel ram set-up. It may have the choke machined off too.
Basically what I am looking a is an avenger style carburater however I can't afford the price of a new carb right now, I will be offroading and climping steep hills at the desert, I think I can get a holley 4 barrel to work, however I do not expect it to be easy. I hope my information helps the guy who statred this thread your inpun to my project is appreciated though.
Update, I just returned from a successful trip to the salvage yard and purchased a 302 out of an 87 F-100 with most of the parts I needed for $125. I also picked up a C-6 transmission for $150 and starter for $15. Now I need to get the intake, carb., C-6 to carb linkage, and valve covers to complete the engine.
Sounds like a pretty good score. So I guess you decided to go with the C6 rather than the AOD. No O/D of course, but it's a much stronger transmission.
