Underdrive pulleys?

Whats everyone think of these? Do they really provide power gains? Is it safe to turn your accessories a lower speed all the time? (if so why didn't the manufacturers do this?)

To me it seems like this is something that the engineers could've taken care of if it was safe.

Discuss.

Underdrive pulleys became all the rage with the 5.0 Mustangs. I've seen dyno tests where they can pick up 5-10 horsepower when using them. The only downside there might be is if you were to spend a lot of time in traffic idling, then the alternator might not keep the battery charged up. Otherwise, they're a fast and relatively cheap way to get some free horsepower.

I haven't tryed the pullys but if they help as much as my efans do they are worth the money. I gained power & mileage with the efans.

Most manufacturers don't advise to do any heavy pulling with underdrives, but I have heard people say they haven't had any problems with them.
