Hello! My '78 Ford F-150 truck smells of gasoline even after it's been sitting in my driveway for hours. I can't park in my attached garage because it makes my house smell like gas.
I should have mentioned that . . . No, it's not leaking gas out onto the ground. It is my assumption that gas is leaking somewhere, but I can't seem to figure out where. I don't see any gas leaking around the carb or near the gas tank.
Has anyone else had this problem and was able to fix it?
Where's your gas tank, behind the seat or under box? Is the smeel so string that you can't determine if it's coming from the front or rear of the vehicle?
If the lines from the charcoal cannister have been removed the gas smell might be from the vapor recovery cannister. There is a line from the cannister to the air cleaner that draws fresh air thru the charcoal which pulls off the vapor. Without that line the fuel vapor from the tank will saturate the charcoal and you will not see a leak but it will smell like gas around your truck.
I've only had it for 2 months, so I haven't experienced the smell on a cold day. However, it stinks at 100 degrees and 65 degrees and all points in between. Further, it stinks on both full and rather empty tanks of gas.
One thing to do would be to drop the tank and replace all the rubber fuel line from the tank to the carb. Including the filler tube. It should probably be done anyway and while it may not eliminate the problem, it will eliminate one cause and you can continue troubleshooting.
