OK guys, what have you done to squeeze a couple extra mpg out of your truck? I've got a '99 F-150 with a 4.6 and I'm getting about 19 to 20 mpg. (lot's of traffic lights on the way to work). I drive the speed limit and accel. slow and stop slow. Any tips?
19 to 20 pretty good to start
under drive pulleys or electric fan
tonnue cover if there is any highway miles
k+n air filter / air raid set up
with a lot of stop and go carry only what you need
keep up on tire pressure don't go with the mudders
I can only dream of getting that good of mileage. I'm getting 11-13 with a K&N and a 3" exhaust. I think the biggest gain I will be getting is by dropping down to a smaller tire size (previous owner put 35's on) once these wear out.

Are you sure you calculated that right? That's about as good as it gets!
yeah, i agree, i drive a 97 f150 and am getting 12 mpg, dont complain about 19 mpg. gas in mn is 2.60/gal. i drive the speed limits, and its only a 4.6L, what would you guys suggest?

I've gone from 12 to 27 mpg, simply by driving my wife's car to work! I only use the truck for truck stuff now. Rob
Well, the best thing to do to save gas is to remove junk, i.e. the catalytic converter, just don't tell the government, or if you are worried that the cops will look under the vehicle, just use a plasma arc cutter and gut them. Saves between 1-2.5mpg, depends on how you drive, the only thing you have to put up with is the noise.
19 MPG is amazing with these engines. I can get 15 MPG with a 4x4 5.4L. Jus try performance air filter, exhaust (bonus is it sounds great), possibly a toneau cover. I have heardsome people swear by them.

I've got all 3, and have to agree, but I would die for 15 mpg right now. These cold mornings have had me remote starting early, and the last tank was a stellar 10MPG!!!!!
I had a 97 f150 supercab with the 4.6l non4x4 and was getting around 18-19.2 depending how well I monitored my driving habits.
unfortunately that got totaled by a 16 yo driver pulling out in front of me while I was doing 50.
I now have an 03 f150 supercrew fx4 5.4l who has yet to pass a gas station it didn't like. I am getting 13.75 m.p.g. and called a buddy bitchin bout it the other night and he said in his 99 f150 supercab non 4x4 w/a 5.4l he was only getting 12.78-13 a galon.
I am however thinking of going with a tonneau cover to cut down on wind drag to see if that helps.
