Any body have trouble with your starter not stopping after the truck is started? I started mine on saturday fired up fine then i heard a strange noise so i shut it off and it sat there and cranked untill the battries went dead. I thought it was going to catch fire smoke was rolling off the starter. Called road side assistance to come and get it and take it to the dealer. It was to go in on tuesday for the recall about the wireing harness. By the way its a 2004.
I had that problem with my 95 Dodge with the cummins motor. Turned out the starter motor went bad as well as my fuel shutoff solenoid. It kept running after the ignition was shut off. It didn't run normal when she was shut off though. Real bad loping and real rough like it was mssing about 4 of the six cylinders. I ended up disconnecting my batteries. Replaced the starter and the fuel shutoff solenoid and no problems. That was on my Dodge, don't know if it would be the same on the Fords. The actuator on the starter stayed engaged with the flywheel, causing it to continue to crank. Fuel shutoff solenoid kept providing fuel, causing motor to still run, but real bad.
Happened to me on a '83 Cabellero. Originally changed the starter because of intermittent no start problems. Sometimes just waiting a few minutes or moving the car a few feet would cause it to start normally. looked and looked for electrical problems. Finally decided to change the starter just to eliminate it as the source of the no start. Got a rebuilt at Autozone - gave me one for a 305 even after I insisted it was a 350. Didn't fit, of course. Finally got the right one by matching ther Delco numbers. Put it on , and bam - hit the key and starter run forever. Had to pull battery cables to stop, even with key off. (Remember key action was still suspect). Finally ran small wire to solenoid only, with main bat cable on. Same thing. Removed batt cable from starter, leaving only small solenoid wire. When touched to battery, small wire went up in smoke! Between times, tried various shims, thinking perhaps starter was binding, to no avail. When wire smoked, pulled starter, unfortunatelly dropping it as it came down, right on the solenoid, busting it,of course. Anyway, got new solenoid (out of pocket), installed, put starter in without any shims, been working ever since. Oh yeah, cut starter replacement time from an hour to 12 minutes with all that practice!
sounds like a bad starter solinoid. did you try to unhook it so it would stop? i have seen them do that before and the batteries blew up. the high amperage the starter draws makes the battery very hot.
