Ok guys I had a bad starter solenoid on the fender in my truck I swapped it out and then my starter went so I swapped it now it is not disengaging the starter If I turn the key to the run position it starts cranking and fires right up before I an let the glow plugs cycle or anything and it won't disengage the starter I turn off the truck and the starter is spinning loud for a couple seconds till it stops no matter if it just start the truck or start it and run it for a couple minutes then shut it off any ideas
Did you happen to reverse the wires on the fender mounted solenoid by accident? The Y shaped connector has a large wire that runs to the battery positive post and a smaller wire that runs to the starter solenoid. It should only go one one way but I suppose it is possible to get that flipped around and reverse the circuit.
When I took off the old solenoid I switched it over exactly as I took it off I put them on the new one and it worked properly for all of a day and a half then I chanced the glow plugs on the drivers side and fixed a leaking fuel water separator / fuel filter drain and put it all together and it fired right up when I turn the key to the run position let the glow plugs cycle and backed outa the garage and then I heard a grinding noise from the starter trying to engage again when it was still running but then I shut it down and tried to restart it and she i turned the key to the run position it cranked and fired up if I turn it past run to start it doesn't change anything I'm wondering maybe a ignition switch or or something like that but I am it sure and I've been fighting electrical for a week and its driving me up the wall
The wire marked ignition / start that slides on the solenoid if I start the truck then pull that wire off the solenoid the starter disengages so I'm thinking its the ignition switch I the cab behind the cover for the fuse box that's bolted to the steering column I also pulled the shroud off the column and puller the key tumbler outa the column and studied it there is a white ish colored plastic abs ? Bar that moves when you turn the key I can see that move back and forth in the column down as far as where the column tilts and the on the back side of the ignition switch from the pics I looked up there is a pin the I assume goes into a bar similar to the one in the top half that the top bar pushes to engage the different functions of the switch but I can't see it in there and I see nothing for the top bar to push down below so should is it just me or would that seem to be we're the problem is at or atleast that area
Replaced the starter switch but not sure that its the problem I think it's actually the plastic and cast aluminum linkages between the starter key switch and the actual starter switch order the parts the should be here tomorrow and ill have to pull the whole steering column and tear it completely apart from what I can see to replace the linkage pieces in there not real excited about it I know that does any one have good direction or pics to tear the column apart to get in there or is it strait forward and easy to do ? Any special tools to get it apart ?
