Question ***??? Goodyr MTR vs BFG Mud ???***

2005 F-250 Lariat
Crew Cab/Short Box
FX4 6.0L PSD

OK, I'm going with new 285/70/17 tires on stock rims soon. I've always replaced with BFG AT but want to go with mudders this time. In your experience, which balances better and has the more true manufacturing roundness for on-road driving, BFG Muds or Goodyear MTR?

BFG M/t is a harder tire then an MT/r therefore will last longer, I have about 20k miles on mine with probably 0k left. And I drive hard. Besides I don't think the mt/r's have nearly as much sidewall strength then the BFG's for towing or whatever.

My friend got a 6" lift with 37" toyo mud terrains and they are sweeeeeet.

I've run both on my Bronco, 31-10.50's. Have the BFG M/T now.

The MTR's were a little better on the street, mainly in handling fast corners.
The BFG's are far superior in mud, hill climbing and loose dirt. I really didn't like the performance of the MTR's off road but I don't rock crawl and that's what they were designed for originally.
BFG M/T's are also quieter in my opinion. I would go with the BFG's.

I am on my 3rd set of MTR;s so far on my trucks.. I have a set of 315 75R16;s sitting in the garage right now with about 1000mi on them. I love the MTRs i have the 285's 75R16's on there now. I have about 15K on them right now and they are wearing great...I had the 315;s on there but with only a leveling kit the 315's were a little to big so they came off.. If anyone wants them let me know., I dont want to say the BFG's are bad or anything since i have never owned them but i can tell you I personally love my MTR's. Check out my Gallery

MTRs aren't mudders. They are "maximum tear resistance" (MTR) or something similar. I haven't owned MTRs, but wheeled with people that had them. They don't clean sticky mud at all, and were designed for circumstances that needed softer/stickier tread like rock crawling.

Uhmmm, try Maximum Traction / Reinforced. While they are not specifically mudders they will git pretty well in the mud. Yes, I 've done that. They are better in the wet road conditions than the BFG's due to slightly more siping and a softer compound. I had problems balancing mine. The BFG's are better in mud and off road. They have a harder compound and a slightly more open tread. They definitely wear better than the MTR's.

They both have 3 ply sidewall and overall solid construction, rim guards, etc. I would say for mileage and off road performance in sand and mud, go BFG. If you want wet traction, snow traction and you rock crawl, go with the MTR's

I had Goodyears, I think they were called mud terrain and drove through a muck bottomed stock tank even after they had quite a bit of miles on them but they were so noisy I couldn't carry on a conversation in the cab. I have Goodrich on now and haven't had them in any bad (good) places yet to vouch for performance but they are almost as quiet as a street tire........ IMO...

I am also trying to decide between these 2 tires. My tire guy says basicly what has been said here. The BFG is best in mud while the MTR is best for rocks. The MTR's don't clean out as well. On Tirerack, the MTR has a slighly higher over all rating. They are both on back order with Tirerack. I have both on order and will decide when they come in stock. Im leaning towards the MTR because of better hwy, and snow traction.

As long as you're not in the thick, gooey, red-clay, death mud down in the south (i.e. Georgia / Alabama) the MTR's do pretty well in the mud. A little spin and they're clear. I've put them in some decent crap, nothing too nasty before the truck went up, but they did fine. I was towing about 5K worth of sloshing water trailer through mud about 1/3 of the way up the tires (305/70/16's in the gallery )and they dug and cleared out fine. But, I could never get them balanced well. That was my biggest complaint with them.

Not to highjack the thread, but wolffee do you have a leveling kit on you r 350 or a full lift? Your truck is almost exactly what I want to order.

Thanks,

Nebraska

From: Fort. Lauderdale FL,
The Truck has a 2.5in leaf pack up front and thats it... I have never had the BFG's but my budy i go out in the dirt with has them and they do great.. I just prefer the MTRs. They are good but i just dont think the compare....Mine clean out without a problem...They arent that loud.. My 315's that i had on for the month were noisier then the 285's i have on now... Not by much but a little... The balancing thing i dont knw i think it all depends on your shop and the type wheels help alot as well.. I went with Weld Racing wheels so i had to get the stick on weights instead on the rim weights.. I think this helped out since i have to be honest on the 315's they took some weight when i mounted them on my stocker's but when i put them on my Weld wheels it didnt take more then 2oz in a spot. I think 2 of the wheels didnt have a spot over 1oz.. thats not bad for a 315. When on the stockers i did have like 3oz in some spots it was ugly..But with the better wheel it was a major diff. in balancing them, but those only lasted a month as they were a little to big for the truck in its current state so i went with the 285's. Now those i didnt have a problom with at all balancing i think 1 oz maybe 1.5 was the most it took in one spot.. But these are the stick on weights so you can see them so i dont care.. Plus ptting the wheels that take the most weights in the back of the truck and the best balanced wheels up front will help your ride to..I have had these 285's for about 10k now and they are great... Wearing awsome. to be honest i havent even rotated them yet. I usually do it during the oil change at home but the way it happend to work out i didnt want to rotate thm at like 2k and now i will rotate them in about 500 for the first time. When i do my oil change within the week But anyway they are wearing great. I wont down the BFG's i think they are a good tire i just happen to be a goodyear man.. Some guys are ford men and some are chevy you know, well its the same thing i just happen to have had great service with Good Year over the years so why change. If it aint broke you know...

I have had both on different vehicles. I agree with most comments above and like the both. The biggest difference I see is that the MTR is way better in snow and on icy streets. I mean, the MTR is the best winter tire I have had. I live in the black hills and we deal with quite a bit of snow. Oh, also I have not bought BFGs recently because they are owned by the French.

My vote... wait a couple of months and get the 295/70/17 Toyo MT that is coming out. It will have a higher load rating than the two mentioned. That is what I am waiting for.
