Hey guys, I am wondering what the spline count is on the Dana 60 rear in my truck. Its a 78 f250 supercab 4x4 that came with a 351m. The pin that holds the spider gears in came lose and wedged itself between the ring and pinion. I'm looking at detroit lockers to replace the whole carrier. I'm pretty sure they all came with 35 spliners, but i don't want to buy a locker that doesnt fit. thanks Alot
i thought dana 60 rears only had a 30 spline count? i know dana 70's and the sterling have 35 splines, might want to ask this question in the differential and axle forum, to find out for sure
Only the HD D60's had 35 spline shafts. They are pretty rare and chances that you have 35 spline shafts are slim. But to be on the safe side why not take the 10 minutes to pull a shaft and find out for sure?
Btw, FRONT D60 axles came with 35 spline 1.5" inner axles and smaller 30 spline outers.
you can tell if its a HD 60 by the extra rib in the housing about an inch forward of where the cover bolts on and they don't have 3" axle tubes. they are 3-1/8"
Most HD 60's have the axle shafts held in with studs in the hub and nuts, rather than bolts that go into the hubs.
They are also SUPER rare in fords but pretty common in early 70's dodges.

It is very simple to remove the axle and find out what ya got. Just unbolt the 8 (or 6?) bolts on the hub, and it should pull right out. You might need to pry it out a little bit if its been on there a long time or stuck. What I do when I need to pull an axle is park the truck on a hill (sideways), you could put one tire on a ramp, jack it up, whatever, so when the axle comes out you dont lose your gear oil. If you pull it on a level surface, oil will come out and run down your wheel. The axle SHOULD be 30 spline. Older model trucks came with a 19 spline Dana60, I have one in my 65. When you put the axle back in make sure you put some silicone on the hub so it seals back up.

Need to be careful with this. Dana 61 also had the extra rib and had 3-1/2" axle tubes. And they were available in F-250s and E-250s from the late 70's to the mid 80's.
