So I am backing out of the driveway this morning and as I go to shift into 2nd(coming out of reverse)The whole shift lever literally comes out in my hand.I had no way to shift and the truck was stuck in reverse. So I get my brother to stop over and hold the clutch in while I tow the truck back to the driveway. So anyway I need to figure out how to get the shift lever back in.I have removed the tranny cover and still cant see exactlley how it goes together. Its a direct likage/tower type tranny in a 85 f-250 4x4.Thanks
I'm assuming you have a 4spd tranny. So here goes my best guess the shifter has a cup shaped piece of tin that slides over the shaft of the shifter. This cup has two slots on either side. The cup slides down into the top of the shift tower which has two pins again on either side the slots are aligned with the pins and then the cup is push downward there will be some spring pressure to over come. You feel the cup bottom out on the pins the cup is the rotated slightly to lock it on the pins.
Now for the bad news the cup or the pins or both are most likely worn or it would not have come apart, and should be replaced.

I got the shifter back together after awhile of examining it,now the problem is that the shift pattern is all messed up.No Nutreal, no reverse and I cant be 100% what gear its in.Anyone know how to get the truck into nutreal to get everything bsck together correctley? Is there a better way of doing this? Thanks.,
Look down into the shifter hole.
You will see a slot for the end of the shifter to fit into.
In neutral this slot will be dead center.
Actually the slot is formed by a notch in each of the shift forks.
Use a large screw driver to move one of the forks so they line up.
Now install the shifter.
Before doing this block the wheels so there is no movement of the vehicle once you move the plate.
The thing is that I removed the shift tower to figure out how to get the shifter back in.The shift rods on the tower were moved and when I took the shift tower out the gears changed so I really have no clue as to where I am.I guess had I done better research earlier on this would have been a easy job but do to my screwing with things I have turned it into a major pain.Anyone got any other ideas? Thanks alot for all the help.
Got everything back together. The retaining spring was never installed it just sat on top of the assembley so that was the original problem.Gotta take it for a spin but it feels alot better than it did before. Thanks alot for the help all.
