I`m looking at buying a 1990 F-150 4x4 300-6 4 spd.and was wondering what the most common problems are on thins trucks? what to look for? and such
thanks for you help
the I6 is a great motor, Lots of torque! Good for towing, not racing.
4sp.. is that manual or auto. I'll assume auto and they the E4OD for that year was problematic (trans code E on the drivers door jam tag)
Check to make sure all the bulb checks come on when you turn the key on. You should see the Check engine, OD, ABS, Antilock Brakes, and Airbag/sealtbelt lights all come on.
Crawl under and check the rear suspension for rust issues. Check springs, shackles, mounts, brake line, E-brake cables, gas tank leaks, gas tank straps...
If it has dual tanks, switch between them to make sure they both work and that one does not fill theother. There was/is a crossflow problem that can develope where one tank fills the other that requires pump replacement to fix ($$$) but you can live with it easy enough too.
It should fire up, run, and drive fine.
oil pan for rust, oil pressure the gauge is an idiot light, radius arms and bushings, hidden rust under truck, get a good light and look at everything. great engine if maintained well.
