Hello,
I'm new here. I'm looking to get a 1991 F-150 with the 351 and an E4OD. I wanted to convert it to a MAF system so that I could hop it up more and tune it better. Would it be possible to do this or am I just dreaming? If it is possible I was planning on taking the electronics from a newer truck and just swapping them. That would be the easiest way to do it, right? If not, is there and easier way? Thank you.
Im shooting for a 4wd. Im not looking to make it to hopped up, I'm just looking for more oomph than the sotcker has. I think my goal would be 350-400hp. No mroe than that though.
well the stock system can handle heads, a very specifc cam, headers , exhaust and intake along with a larger throttlebody.
the cam is the important part it can not have a lobe seperation less then 114*
comp cam 35-255-5 is one used by many and are happy with it. you could figure with the right combo you might get close to that .
Thats right. start with a few things at a time. i would start with heads like AFR 185cc or edelbrock performer heads. go with that cam and headers with a new y pipe and 3" exhaust out stock location. then later you can add the edelbrock truck efi intake and bbk 56mm throttle body to finish things off.
Excellent ideas. That would put me at about 350hp or so? Do you think that would up the gas mileage a wee bit since it's more free flowing, or would the extra power hurt gas mileage?
hard to say on mpg. anytime the motor can work more efficently there will be gains but depends on how much your right foot is into it. also depends on what size tires and gears you have
Well, generally around town I keep my 1991 F-150 with a bored over 302 under 1500 RPM, but I do have my tendencies to drop that habit and have at it. I was thinking maybe 32" or 33" tires, and once i find out what gears I have in my truck now probably 3.73, or 3.42 or something in that range.
Could I run like 3.7something gears? Well, I guess I could, I have 31's on my truck now and it runs fine. Would 4.10's be mandatory to get the truck moving, or would they just be needed to have any low-end power?
well stay with the gears you have running 31's they are fine. but going to a 410 with 33's is just nice and puts the rig close to what stock would be if you were running stocktires/gears. gears can be spendy so you dont want to go in there to change to many times. and since you have an Overdrive tranny running the correct gear/tire ratio wont hurt your mpg if anything it may help
Ok, I see how this works now. 31's and stock gearing is about the same as 33's and 4.10 gears. That makes sense. Sort of. How would I go about fixing the speedometer? I know with 33's it would definatly be off at least some.
