Same problem here...

My wife's Expi is doing the same thing. But, in addition, it has died a couple of times. But after turning the key off, then re-starting, it starts/idles fine.

It started out with a hesitation and surging around the same speeds (40-60) and during acceleration and it died once on her. I was hoping it would be something simple like the fuel filter, so I replaced that today.

After disconnecting the battery (while changing the filter) to reset the any codes, I drove around for about 15 minutes (outside temps in the upper 80's as others have mentioned) and it hesitated/surged several times and died twice. The "Service Engine Soon" light came on too.

I ran down to the parts store and they pulled the following 4 codes and gave the following descriptions, but I couldn't find corrilating codes/reasons so I'm not sure if they're correct.

P1299 - Fuel/Air Metering sensor
P0451 - something about evaporation sensor
P0443 - something about evaporation sensor again
P1451 - Auxiliary Emmissions sensor.

Has anyone else pulled any codes?

Btw, what is COP?

Regards,
Robert

Buzzard thanks for the help, Autozone wouldn't read the codes without the check engine light on. Guess I will have to wait, or take it to the shop.

I took mine to the stealership this morning. They said it's a couple of sensors in the fuel tank, one was for fuel pressure. The parts are $139, but the labor is another $350.

Gonna try and replace the sensors myself. Wish me luck. :P

Thanks for the info. Did the dealership pull any codes that referred to the sensors in the fuel tank? How did they diagnose the problem? Did they say anything about why the outside temperature might cause the problem?

I'm not sure what codes they pulled yet. They just called me earlier with the diagnoses. From what I understand, they have some "pin point" computer thing that will pin point the problem. I'll be getting more details when I pick it up tonight.

BTW, I meant to say that they are charging $450, not $350 for labor. :bend_over:

Just got back from picking up my truck.

Well, $89 to tell me that they used their magic wand ("Pin point" diagnostic system) to tell me that the Fuel tank pressure Sensor and the Canister Vent Soleniod were to blame for my issue. Both are in the fuel tank, so the tank needs to be dropped to access them.

I'm going to try to replace the parts myself this weekend. I'll try to follow up after I change out the parts to let you know if it was indeed the root of my problem. Luckily this truck is not our daily driver, but rather our weekend boat hauler.

Not sure if the problems you other guys' are experiencing are caused by the same parts or not, but it may point you in the right direction. Hope this info helps someone else.

Well, the $140 in parts wasn't my problem like the dealership assured me. I'm so pissed.

Anyone else solved this problem yet?

What did you find on this? I was doing some searching on here as my truck had a misfire, but then died.

I just signed up hoping to find an answer to...something a lot...like this.

I'm in MI so it's not the ambient temperature though. With no engine light I was almost convinced the hesitation in low revs between 3-4 change and low 4th gear meant the end of my tranny at 160k (98 EB 5.4). (So I started with trans fluid and filter change, which is not so hard as I read some places).

Dealer diagnosis (desperate measure) confirmed a misfire for no clear reason and a long list of things they would like to try swapping out. I'm not playing that game willingly.

Changed fuel filter last night - last done at 140k - with no change in behavior.

I have found that if I hold the throttle just right, I can maintain the misfire. After a half mile or so the engine light flashes. No codes though :-( And the light stops flashing within seconds of me accelerating or decelerating when the misfire disappears.

More inspiration needed badly please.

Which is one of the risks when you have them diagnose and then install the parts yourself.

I work at a dealership, my Expo did it also. There is a TSB reguarding this. It ultimately has to do with fuel tank slosh. Replacement of the fuel pump is usually required with a new one per TSB. I cant guarantee this will fix your surge, but it did mine with the exact same problems most of you have. I would take it to a reputable dealer and let them know what you found. Dealers have a hard time diagnosing this problem due to fact it is an intermittent problem. My ford website is down, or I would give the TSB #. Remember that if you want to do this yourself you will need the p/n for your vehicle application, do not replace with aftermarket, get the Ford pump listed in the TSB, per application.

WHOA! I'm so glad I ran into this.. I have been dealing with the surging for 3 years! I have taken "Mom's Bus" into 2 different dealerships and 3 different mechanics trying to find out why its happening... Again, no check engine, no codes, and it only does it when its above 85 degrees (New Mexico summers are a bugger) We need to keep bumping this until we find a solution.

Thanks all! (first post after sufing the site for over a year)
