With regards to paying for gas, what's your breaking point? Or in other words, at what price per gallon will you give in, and drastically change the way you live? Some of you may be doing this NOW. I'm guessing however, that most of us have not changed much, even at $2.70 per gal. Sure we may complain, but I personally have not altered my lifestyle in the least.
For me, it would probably have to hit $5.00 per gal.
Thats what it costs here in Canada already, well $1.06 a litre which works out to $4 a gallon. We have plenty enough oil and gas to supply our own and still pay ridiculous prices. $2.70 a gallon was what we were paying 4 years ago. Has it affected how I live, certainly. I am biking or taking the bus where ever I need to go. Trips are really out of the question at this point unless it is with a group of people (i.e. fishing trips.....).
Maybe need to invest in a econo-box or hybrid? We'll see.

And how much of that price is taxes? I believe your actual prices are just about the same as the US (given exchange rates)...
I think that when gas hits $5 a gallon, I'll start looking for a job closer than 25 miles away from home and start limiting the weekend trips. Or make them on a bike.

Yeah, good point. With about $130 for a year's worth of insurance I could be having a lot more fun. My '89 Honda NX650 gets about 35MPG... wow, I just realized I could be driving a Civic with that mileage. But it's not as much fun as a Honda enduro with two-wheels
If gas gets that high, I BETTER be working in a refinery or chemical plant by then! I didn't quit my bottom-of-the-barrel crewboat engineer job to try and put my PTECH degree to use for nothing....
Just got back home from an employment test for Shell Chemical in Deer Park, just in case any anti-petrochem types needed a cheering up! I have one next Tuesday night for ConocoPhillips in Sweeny, fyi....
If the price of gas is still $2.70 a gallon this winter, I probably wont be going up to northern Wisconsin as much to ride my snowmobile.
Instead of going up every other weekend (Thursday-Sunday), I will probably cut it back to every third weekend.
If wood wants my primary winter heat source, Id probably consider trading my F-150 in on a Focus. However, what I save in heating costs more than pays for the higher cost of fuel for the F-150 vs. a Focus.
Octane
My lifestyle has already been changed. I can't afford to get anything else, so I'm just driving around my truck as little as possible. Usually, that's just to work and back during the week, and stay at home during the weekend. I haven't left town in a few weeks, and I am starting to go nuts from it. Now, I'm out of work for two days due to an injury, I can't go anywhere, I can't afford the gas to do anything.
Habits changed almost three years ago, now that I think about it. My wife and I commute together, now. (We work less than 10 feet apart, now. Duh.) Only one car goes into DC, now, instead of two.
We drive a small car, instead of a truck. 35 mpg. instead of 10 mpg.
I've started looking for a locking gas cap for my truck and the van. (Just what I need. . . some miscreant stealing my liquid gold.)
A recent article indicated the US auto manufacturers thought $3 bucks a gallon as the point people would switch from SUVs to more fuel efficient vehicles. Not sure where they came up with that number. ( Until reading that, I could not understand why everyone but Ford dropped the compact pickup truck.)
I drive over 100 miles each day commuting and have been forced to park my truck and get a small car. 35 MPG is much better than before, though the car was inexpensive, it still required a monthly payment, with the break-even point somewhere down the road. With the Chinese and other economies growing, gas will continue to go up so I figured it better to bite the bullet now than to wait for the inevitable.
I just complain alot, but i haven't changed other than that, still get my fuel at the same shell station.
Now my parents, my dad he hasn't changed but my mom's truck gets like 10mpg and sucks down the fuel like nothing while my dad's F150 gets around 15 on the back roads.
