hi i am building a 351M engine and am looking for horsepower but odnt wanna spend a whole lot im just wandering what a good setup is i was tihnking of boring it .30 over, balance and blue print it, and i wanna get a preety big cam with about a 500 lift but dont know what a good size would be or a good setup for a intake carb. and camshaft could somene please give some suggestion thanks all help is apreciated kevin g.
Kevin, you will hear alot of advice about what to do to the M block. I have a comp. 268 cam edelbrock intake dynomax headers, flows, holley 1850 600 carb. The biggest power gain came from the headers. Please don't put a big carb on it. I have tried 4 and the little 1850 [600 cfm] runs the best. My 79 f-100 runs high 15 with a 3.25 gear with the air on.
Here is some info from an old thread. The authors know who they are. I take no credit for the info below. Hope it helps!
"There are some things that you can do, you can have the heads opened up with bigger valves and some good port work, Edelbrock Performer intake and carb. A good cam and valvetrain components, good pistons , and this type of thing. Any motor can make decient power with the right parts inside."
"Secondly there are ways to build "M" motor. The first hurdle is compression. By using various Cleveland pistons you can get the compression ratio you want. I recommend about 9.5:1, no higher."
Keep it Rubber Side Down!
i decided i will prob. put a edelbrock performer intake manifold with a edelbrock 600 cfm carb. and thinkin bout getting aluminum heads, just wandering what kind of cam setup would be good with the intake im getting thanks kevin g
I converted to a 400 and I ran the comp cam 265 deh edlebrock 400 intake some port work on the heads toped it off with a Holley 750 duel line carb. I also ran a small stall converter. When I canverted I used flat top pistons to get 9.1 to 1 comp. After all that all I had to do was get a new tranny because with the power diff. it smoked my tranny and thats done now.
My first advice is to rebuild it as a 400. The only difference is the crank and piston rod length to make a 400. Next you could go with many combinations of cam, carb, and intake. You could also get aluminum heads, but you didn't mention your budget.
The difference between the 351M and 400 is the crank and pistons. If you are rebuilding anyway you will need pistons. The rods are the same in a 351M or 400. You can swap in a 400 crank into the 351M block. Stick with the iron 2V heads. Search the Cleveland forum for more info.
