I'm fixing to take my 1999 Expedition into the garage on Wednesday, the mechanic thinks its the fuel pump which will cost $588 total to replace.
Expy problem: when idling more than 5 minutes in Park, the vehicle will start "missing/shuddering" and then turn off. I cannot restart it (I can if I'm on my sloped driveway vehicle facing downward). I had it towed twice and both times it started when on the tow truck and it ran fine. I just don't want to get stuck again.
I've changed the fuel filter, IAC valve. Any more ideas before I break my bank
Buy a fuel pump and replace it yourself. I have not messed with a fuel pump on this truck, is it inside the tank? If so, it's a bit of a job, but it is doable if you have the time to spend. I replaced my fuel pump in a 1995 Dodge Ram (in the fule tank), the hardest part was getting the tank down. After that it was as simple as sliding the old one up and out and sliding the new in. It took me about 4 hours to get it done, but saved me about $400. So, in effect, I payed myself $100 an hour to do it, well worth the effort.
Insert a pressure gauge in the fuel line to monitor pressure while running. It’s a cheap, inexpensive way to determine the state of your fuel pump. Gauge, hoses, clamps.... less than $30.00.
