I have a 98 4x4 5.4 it is an absolute base govt' contract model. It has the tape deck installed from the factory. What radio chassis size do I need to pull and replace it with. I have been told it is called a Double DIN. This is not the MACH system, there is no amp. Crutchfield is having difficulty as it is not an XLT or Eddie Bauer so just like the morons at the parts houses, (Pep Boys mainly), who cannot find parts for it because they insist it doesn't exist because it is not in their computer.
Are you trying to replace it with a stock CD player or an aftermarket unit? If aftermarket, you will simply need a dash kit and whatever HU you want. If you are looking to replace it with a stock unit, I would venture to guess that all the dash cut-outs for that year are the same size. I can't see them making completely different dashes for the different stereo options they offered that year. I would go hit up some junkyards or auto recyclers and just see what you can find that came out of a 98 Expy and see if they fit.
The stock opening should be 1.5 DIN not double DIN, although you can make a double DIN fit with some modification. As stated above, if you are replacing it with an aftermarket 1/2 DIN size model, just get the intall kit to cover up the gap.
Many online sites selling radios will have a radio/vehicle compatibility check. Most of the popular brands will fit your vehicle. I've just finished replacing my factory radio on my '98 Exp with an after market unit. The hole in the dash can be covered by using an install kit such as a Metra 99-5800. This will completely fill the empty dash space with a pocket that can be used for storing CD's etc. (my Colt .380 fits nicely in it for when I really, really, really wanted that parking space). The important thing to do is to map your wires. Since we have similar vehicles we may have the same color coding, but there's no gaurantee. Here's how MY factory wiring is laid out: From the power harness: Battery- white/brown, ACC- black/purple, Dimmer- lt blue/black, Ground- black, AMP- drk blue. From the speaker harness: LF+ lt green, LF- white/orange, RF+ black, RF- white/red, LR+ yellow, LR- lt blue/black, RR+ lt blue, RR- purple/white.
