I tow a 22' 4500 lb boat with my 2004 5.4 scab Fx4. I can't complain about the amount of power it has when it is not in o/d. My boat has center console and a t-top which creates lots of drag. The truck pulls it strong however it hurts at the pump I average 9-10 mpg towing the boat. The truck is rated to tow 9300 lbs but I can't imagine towing that much with it. In my opinion 7500 lbs is at its limit of effcient towing but thier are plenty of folks who tow more than with these trucks. I would hate to see thier MPG though.

Yes, I think the 7500 might be pushing it with regards to safety, comfort and gas mileage. I'm trying to decide between two boats and one weighs 7500 and the other is 5000 without fuel and ice etc. Both have 100 gallon fuel tanks so those weights will go up.
I just wanted to see if you guys agree. This is not a one time deal. I would be towing weekly over mountains etc. I don't want to overwork my truck.
Thanks,
My Limit

Your towing capacity will depend on your gear ratio, wheel base and wether or not it is a 4x4. Check this link out for your actual towing capacity. http://www.fordvehicles.com/trucks/f...res/specs/#tow
From the looks of the towing chart 6500lbs is pushing it for a 4.6L truck.

I tow a 26ft boat with a 2004 SCREW 54.4 3:73 LS Lariat. The boat in its entire package weighs in excess of 7200lbs with fuel etc. It tows great safely with no sacrifice in comfort. Of course anytime you tow fuel mileage declines! My truk is rated to 9500lbs, so there is plenty of margin. Just make sure you have surge brakes. I am in Fla so there is no hilly terrain to overcome.
