Yesterday I was out working on the highboy tightening up the steering box and noticed that there is a lot of slop in the steering shaft. I examined it close and determined that it is all in the universal joint at the bottom of the steering column. What I was wondering is do the new fords use as similar spline size and spline count on the new trucks? For example could I get a fairly new steering shaft from a wrecking yard and lengthen or shorten it to fit the highboy? If the attachment at both ends is the same then only the length becomes an issue....I could cut the shaft and lengthen or shorten as needed. The truck is a 11-1976 F250 Highboy with power assist steering. What do ya all think?
Go buy a Borgeson steering shaft. They make them for our highboys and they are fully adjustable for length. They also run needle bearings in the u-joints for a nice smooth turning shaft. Its my opinion that its your best option.
That is prolly a good option. I contacted a local drive line shop and they agreed to replace the universal joint for me. I will let ya know how it works out. He plans to cut the joint off the shaft and replace the entire yoke section and the spline clamp yoke on the end.

Man howd you make out!
I have the same play in the u joint were it join the steering box.
I talk to a driveline machiniast today and he said they could slpine a piece ,but it would be exspencive to spline??
I thought about cutting the joint off butiam unsure of how to get anther joint the right lenght to fit.
How did the machinist do the following:

Please please let me know if you found a solution.

Yes...the joint replacement was rather simple. The driveline shop locally did the work. If you wanted to have this done here I could send you the contact information and you could UPS the shaft to him. He used an abrasive wheel and cut the old joint off leaving the shaft untouched. There are splines under the old shaft joint. He simply chamfered the shaft to clean up the end and slid a new Spicer greasable u-joint on the shaft. He then passed an end mill down the bolt hole and made the retaining groove for the bolt to pass thru. He then torqued the bolt in place with some red loctite. The finished product is like a new one but better in that I can grease it. I now have no play in my steering for the cost of $147.00. Sweet!

Hi bill
Thanks for your quick reply. This sounds like the way i'am going to go.
147.00 is not to bad,and a greasable joint is a difinate bonus.
Could you please send the contact info from your local driveline shop for back-up.Your guy seem like he is pretty keen.
I will talk to the drive line guy close to me ,if he is not interested then i will likely use your guy. Almost forgot would you know the spicer part # for the greasable u joint,be sweet if you did
My Bronco shaft has the rag joint on the top. I would like to eliminatethe rag joint if i can.Ill settle to get the joint fix and replace the rag joint with a new one

Call and talk to the owner. Some steering shafts he won't do. Most of the older Fords he will work on. Tell him what you have and see if it is something he will touch. He does really nice work and in a very timely fashion. I dropped it off one day and had it back the next day nicely finished and better than new. These folks do a lot of work in volume and after a while all shafts look the same. I would be sure to tag the parts with your name and contact info before you ship it.
I am sorry but I don't have the Spicer part number. I am sure that the phone number posted above will get that info if you give him a call.
