'97 Explorer: driver's side door lock switch only locks all of the doors and does nothing when the unlock side is pressed. I've replaced the switch and found out the hard way (dealer won't take back electical parts!!!) that the switch is not the problem. What to check next??
Can you unlock the doors from the switch by the liftgate? If that works the wire between the unlock relay & the driver door switch is open somewhere. Most likely where it flexes when you open & close the door.
wlederle, does the passenger side switch do anything? Had a problem with my locks but neither switch worked so I just replaced the drivers side because that is the only side I used, still would not work replaced the passenger side switch and everything started working! If I unplug the passenger side switch nothing will work again, plug it in and all is ok. Wierd huh!
I replaced the drivers side switch only to learn that doing so didn't solve the problem. What a comfort to know that the dealer has a "no return policy" on electrical parts. If anyone is in the market for a new drivers side door switch, I've got one. Thank goodness for eBay.
All switches work fine: rear hatch, passenger side switch, key fobs. It appears that the driver side unlock is the sole problem. Thanks to K2JJB, I think I have an open circuit on the P/Y wire going to the drivers door. I will start at the brain box over the left rear wheel to see if there is a loose connection or possible relay problem. From there its a hunt with the ohm meter. If I were to guess, I would thhink it might be in the flex hose in the drivers door hinge.
I'm confident that I'll solve the problem, however, time is something I seem to have a shortage of. That and money, of course. Thanks to all who posted replies. I hope to report a successful fix.
