How much support for engine?
Hello. I have a 54 f100 that we put a "volare" front clip in. That is looking good, but I am having some problems with the motor mounts. It has a stock chevy 350 small block about 1976 vintage with the 350 transmission. The right side mount is working out ok, but the left is a different story. I managed to get a mount in front of the steering box back to the front bolts on the middle of the stock motor mount area of the block. This looks like it might put too much stress on the transmission, at least more than stock. Should I worry?

first welcome to FTE...your choice of trucks is a good one, although I question your choice of engine mfgr.
The Volare's are tough on the left side due to that big ole honkin steering box. you should be able to fab up something that sits next to the steering box with some gussets on the front and rear of the box...
here's a pic of what we did on mine with a 460... I know it's different but it should give you some ideas of what you can do

BTW, forgot your question... if you have adequate support for the engine and a good transmission crossmember, you shouldn't have a problem... if the engine won't fall.... the transmission should be fine

I used their puzzle mount on the passenger side but made my own mount for the driver's side. It is a front mount like the 55-57 Chevy used and sits right on top of where the Chrysler mount originally was. So, I have one side mount and one front mount. It seems to be a solid mount and I'm not worried about stress on the transmission.

This is great. Vern, I was looking for one of those "cradle" mounts, but then I had those worries. But if yours works out, that is great, I should be good to go.
Earl, I deserve my lumps for having that red engine sitting in that Ford. This is someone elses project that I bought, so every thing is not as I would have it, if I were a rich man
John, thanks for the quick reply. Looks like your mounts worked out well. I don't know where I would put all that 460 stuff, though, cause that little chev takes up enough room Maybe I'll paint it blue and stick a distributor on the front to make it look better!

I'm betting there are tons of trucks outfitted just like yours out there and given a short amount of time you will get several responses here to alleviate your woes and give you some advice as the Volare swap is fairly common.

Welcome Jamie, Make yourself at home. Are you going to get heckled for that Orange engine? YES!! (My Ford 272 is red) Is it all in good fun? Well, mostly. Setting up a Ford engine from scratch can be very challenging because of the pulley setups. So when I see one, I know the owner prob had to go the extra mile on his truck. 
But cost is a good excuse too. So, go for it. Make that Ford just the way you like it and drive it with pride.

I have just finished a volare swap and ran into issues over the motor mount thing. I asked around here and after getting great feedback from the users, I fabbed my own mounts, leveled my motor and shorten my own driveshaft with minimal weldling exp. I just finished her in time for our annual car show for the local high school and I had great feedback on the work I completed by many of the local hot rodders. I even had a few "What would you take for her?" made me glad. Don't worry about the bowtie, get it mobile and drive like it you stole it.

Jamie, You will find that us guys who put alternative motors in our old Fords are called "Darksiders" and then there are the "Stockers". I look at as I still saved a vintage piece of steel from turning into a Honda and it needed a motor to make it go. You gotta do what you gotta do. To each their own. I like them all.
