My horns are 15 1/4" and 13 1/4" long. I could not find anywhere other than the frame rail under the passager side to mount them. They are pointed foward and down a little bit. Down to kept the water from staying in there, plus the sound waves will bounce on the payment.
Matt how big were your horns? Are they pointed sideways?
I just finished my install today of a set of Grover air horns for trucks. Let me tell you that thet are very loud! I can't image the emergency stutter horn or the train horns. There is plenty of space along the frame rail to mount a tank and the horns. The tricky part is the compessor. Mine uses a very small non weather proof. I found just enough space next to the passager side battery.
I have heard some people have taken out thier spare tire to mount the train horns because they are so big. There is guy on the other board named shadowgrey who has some Great pics of his install.
The problem I have now is I just can't find a reason to hit my horn anymore!!!
I installed 2 Grover stutter horns (fire horns) on my 05 F350. One on each side. Make sure that you have at least a 5 gallon tank and run 3/8 inch tubing with a large electric solenoid. I also plumbed a quick disconnect underneath the doors for a source of air to supply small air tools. They are not as loud as train horns but still pretty offensive.
I tried to take a pic last night, but could not quite get the horns as I'd like. I switched to the '06 SD ChromeUpgrade grille (sweet) and there are more horizontal tubes, so while it is a bit easier to see the horns with your eye...the camera has a hard timer seeing past the chrome. I did not have the chance to take the grille out.
I installed the compressor on the inner driver's fender behind the power steering reservoir.
I placed the airtank on a fabricated SS bracket under the Ex, attached with SS hardware through two existing holes on the body. I guess it's under the driver's feet.
The horns are mounted on the passenger side of the plastic shroud that directs air from the grill to the radiator. I had to use some nylon spacers (collars) to make sure the horns are parallel to the radiator and don't contact the grill. The horns "blast" towards the center of the the truck. I used a similar set-up on my former Bronco.
I used a relay to switch between regular horns and airhorns, in order to have a lighted switch in the dash to notify that air horns are active. The switch itself looks factory and is installed along with a foglight switch in the blank spot next to the power point on the dash. I think SDs have an air-bag shut off switch there.
Finally, I used the upfitter wires that go from engine compartment to dash area.
This will help me to install my horn set-up...still adding pieces .
I have a Grover Suttertone horn with a 12v valve and a Viair 2.5 gallon tank .
I still need to get the Viair 350C compressor .
