What's involved with repairing a loose UVC harness. How difficult a job is it.
I went on the dieselmann web site www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/ and he was a lot of help in explaining my DTC codes and offering his advice. Thanks Charles Ledger (Dieselmann). I don't want to take up any more of his time as he's spent much time on this already.
I have a large marine mechanics background, and I'm not afraid to repair something myself, but I'm not about to fly blind either.
I simply replaced mine along with the valve cover gaskets. Complete transformation in idle quality and a little extra power to boot. I'm assuming it's because the connection between the IDM and the injectors were cleaned up and efficiency was improved.
It's a very easy job, just remove the valve covers and replace. Pay special attention to the stud that holds the dipstick down, mine wanted to come out with the retainer nut. Get a wrench and hold the stud in place and remove the nut that hold the dipstick tube retainer tab down. After that it's mechanics 101.
It's pretty simple, straight forward job. get a deep well socket, the studs for the CCV and the Oil dipstick are a 1/2" to long for a reg socket. I believe it is a 15 MM. the whole engine is metric. If you have an OBS you will have to remove the alternator for the pass. side VC to lift up and slide out towards the front, all the intake stuff for the driverside to lift right up and out. the bolts back against the firewall are a lil PITA, but not real bad. once the VC's are off all the wiring is right there. 20 minute job
Wow, tech advice on a sunday morning! I'm going to have to haul myself into church today. Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice. I'll do the job Monday a.m. as soon as the part stores are open...... At the risk of asking a dumb question, are UVC harnesses available aftermarket, or are they strictly a ford product.
It's alive!! Thanks guys for all of your advice. The job wasn't half as bad as I expected it to be. Once I removed the drivers side valve cover I could see the problem. The harness had come unsnapped and was just barely connected.
I had the same thing happen to my 7.3. (2001) It happened at 70,000, got it back together and it happened again about 5,000 miles later. This time I took some rayon, 9 ply waxed cord and tied a special stitch we use at work and tied a stitch around the connector, under the gasket and back. It has not come apart again, that was 70,000 more miles ago. This has been an awesome truck since I bought it new. It just keeps getting better. I hope my '05 is as good as it gets broken in and driven more. So far it has been a good running truck, also.
All fixed, no parts, no cost, no dealership. Man, this place has GOT to be hurting Ford's dealerships' profits.
They gonna' have to shut us down for practicing medicine without a license!
Congratulations on doing it yourself. That's why everyone's here at FTE!

i would have to say... this is the kind of customer support ford, and chevy and dodge for that matter, should have come up with on their own years ago.... don't get me wrong... you want a company to do well and make money, but "customer service after the sale" should be more than hollow words... thank goodness for FTE....
Ford knows about this faulty connector and has come out with a new style connector that costs about $13. I am a little embarassed to say I went to the stealer for my little repair and cost me somewhere around $420 total. This is long before I knew about this site and being my first diesel. Next time I will deffinately do some typing first.

i have to say you got HOSED..! i'm SURE that they didn't spend 4 hours on the job, and i don't know of any stealership service depts that charge $100 per hour, although they are getting close...

Did ya have to remind me Johnny....... I think they kept my truck all day on that trip to the doc. But ya I was pissed at the bill and now I hear how easily I could have done it myself. Live and Learn, story of my life...........
If the connector was coming loose, wouldn't you get the P1316 injector trouble code again? My truck sure runs better, but it's not quite right. All connections were solid when I buttoned it up, and with different trouble codes this time around (P1249 & P0475) I'm thinking I've got another gremlin in the machine somewhere. I'm an old marine mechanic but this is a little different than a boat.
