I have two (maybe three) simple basic questions. Is the 302 the 4.9 engine? I've never owned one until now the repair manual keeps referring to the liter size. Anyone know if the 390 will fit into a 89 Bronco? We have a rebuilt 69 390 engine in a 69 F25 and was wondering if either the transmission or 390 would fit with-out much trouble if need be? Thanks for the help so far
Crap... I just found that the 302 is indeed the 5.0...I was searching at Schucks auto parts and ask for plug wires and lo and behold it showed the engine size both ways...man that's embarssing...*blush*
As you've probably figured out by now, the 4.9 is the 300-6.
390 vs. 302... not a real easy swap. The block/bellhousing bolt pattern is different, so you would need a different tranny if running an automatic, or a different bellhousing if running a manual. Actually, I believe the Mazda tranny used in the newer trucks, if that's the one you have, use an integral bellhousing like the automatics so you would have to change that anyway. Motor mounts are different as well, and you would need to change the mount towers. The 390 was never built with EFI, so you would have to swap to a carb or use an aftermarket fuel injection. It would be a novelty, but probably more of a PITA then it's worth.

LOL!!!! TECHNICALLY the 302 is a 4.9!!!! 4943(?) cc's
A rebuilt 390 would be an absolute treat in a later, lighter Bronco- boy would it haul!
It's definitely worth it if you had the time and $$. And it really wouldn't be too expensive unless you had to hire a mechanic/welder to do it- then I bet it would still be better than rebuilding as long as you have the tranny.
There isn't a small block in this forum that could come close to that FE.
Thanks for all the help and encouragment...the 69 that has the rebuilt 390 in her has a book of 4000 low and 12000 high so mabye I ought to just have son sell that 69 and use the money we get from her and buy a rebuilt (new) 302
Now how could that simple and direct observation of the obvious ruffle feathers?? I like the 302 but in a bronco compared to an FE... it wouldn't take a lead worker at checker auto parts to figure that one out there now!
I can agree with selling the 69 as a unit fer sure.
a bronco being lighter compared to what? a tank maybe. also if you have any emission testing in your area it wouldnt fly and in fact is illegal anyways .
either have the 302 rebuilt, swap to a 351w which allows you to keep the same tranny and stay efi if you like or go for the gusto and do a 460 swap. the FE's are best left in the 70's.
