Since you live in wisconsin i would advise you not exceed the Vechiles rated capacity, if cought you WILL get fined $5,000 on the spot by a state trooper no if, ands, or buts. Been there done that with an L8000 dump truck, first thing he looked at was the stickers...didnt even come up and ask me for my registration.
Fergot to mention, I was totally truthfull with the trooper and when i went to court the judged noticed it and droped the charge and i only had to pay for court costs.

thanks everyone. Should have known this was gonna be a debate. Everything is in the towing forum. Don't think I'll have to worry about it for awhile. Somthin' to think about.
You should just consider buying a medium duty truck. They are designed for that much wait. Don't forget you need your CDL to pull a trailer that heavy.
My truck is a 1975 F250 supercab trailer Speical 2 real driveit has bin towing 17000 to 18000lb from the day my dad got it new.I bought from him in 1991 put a 372 Perkins diesel and a allison MT40 in 1993.In 1996 I put a new 6.0 Perkins Phasser and a RTO6610 10sp Fuller 2002 changed to air ride on the rear. still have stockrear drive shaft and ujoint no problems with the frame or drive shaft.Just have to use common scence we are grossing just shy of 24000lb pulling the Minirod pulling sled it has surge brakes. The truck wt is7350lb. empty. We also pull a 32ft tag Pace bigfoot trailer wt.13850lb loaded.I been in MO.ILL.IND.IA.Ioha.No problems with the law.

To answer the original question.
Larger rear axle, larger front spindles and hubs, upgraded brakes, overload springs, 400lbs/ft torque motor, min 3.73 gears, and recertification from the dmv. FordBronco69 is correct, as certified, you will get tagged. I'm not sure what the fine is for being 6000 pounds over weight, but I bet it's not cheap.
I've been overweight with my L9000. 6000 lbs. overweight would be in the 4 digit range. The trooper would make you leave part of your load where the truck sits, or have you go buy the truck that you should have in the first place. Either way, you still have the fine.
Depending on how fast you travle 4.10s might be too high. If you have about 31" tires then at least go with 3.73 gears. If you have room to go up to 32 or 33" tires you might want the 4.10s for towing and with a 33" tire the RPMs wouldn't be to bad.
changing the tire size defeats the purpose of regearing.
Have a '79 F-250 SuperCab and used it to pull a 28' Gooseneck with about 12k in hay on it all the time. It has a 460 with a C-6, Dana 60 rearend with 3.73 gears/ open diff.
Other than using a lot of gas, it does just fine.
