I have gotten my hands on a 78 f100 with a 300 straight six, three speed column shifter and 73,000 miles on it. Or somewhere around there. But it has been sitting for a while, and obviously hardly every gets driven. What should I look for as far as repairs and what might need fixed or worked on? The brakes fade if I stopped at a red light or something. What could be the problem there? I bled the brakes and it only helped a little bit. It has nothing automatic, no a/c, no powersteering or brakes. Extremly basic. Anyway, any advice is very welcome, and very needed. I new at this. Thanks.
The brake fade is the master cylinder. Replace it. I would inspect all of the rubber hoses on the truck. Especially the fuel lines for dry rotting or cracks. Plug wires could be going if they are original. They have low miles for the year of the truck, but are still over 20 years old. Also, lube the front end and u-joints(if they have grease fittings), check all of the fluids.(tranny, rearend, etc).
lube the king pins too, they tend to stick after sitting for a long time. i'd also put some oil in the rear cab mounts, behind the seat, under the floor covering there is 2 rubber gromets, pull them out and spay some oil undercoatin in there, that one place that rusts out and is hard to fix.
Check all the belts the hoses. Check the fluid levels and start it up and look around the engine for leaks possibly. grease evertyhing up. I would also check the tires for dryrot.
Pretty much just give everything a good looking over? What about possibly changing the front end bushings out for urethane bushings? I hear they are pretty good and last just about forever. Have you ever done that before? Got any tips?
No, just 2 bolts hold it on. Just make sure to bench bleed it before you put it on. Most new ones come with a bleed kit and instructions. It's not hard.
