Installing an aftermarket tranny cooler on a PSD is said to be a snap. Indeed, the pics I've seen make it seem simple. However, all my mechanical experience is on older vehicles. What I need is step-by-step instructions, starting with how to get the grill off, rather than just pull the top screws and tip it forward a little. Once I get access to where the cooler goes, I expect I'll get it installed ok.
I've browsed around the sponsor list, but haven't found a source of tranny coolers to order from. Will you sponsors pipe up, and maybe also provide the answer to paragraph 1 above?
Thanks
Warren
I think it had some installation instuctions. I have a 97 so can't offer any help on grille removal, but mine was very simple. Go out there and look it over real good, I bet you find yours is also.
Do you have a transmission temperature gauge installed on your PSD? If so was in before you installed the additional cooler?
I installed a B& M 24000 GVW cooler and I am running about 190 to 200 degrees pulling 12K 5th wheel. I installed a cooler and a temperature gauge @ the same time.
So I don’t have any history on transmission temperature with my truck precooler install.
I am looking for data on what the normal transmission temperature is @ 96 degrees.
Unfortunately NO gages for me either, but a pyro is on wish list (must have list) and will do tranny and boost at that time as well. I pull a 27' gooseneck also about 12k fully loaded.
I did the boost and transmission gauge in a 3 place A post install leaving the 3rd hole for the pyro on the wish list. My thinking is the transmission will die from heat. My 2cents.

I have gauges, oem tran cooler, when I pulled my 5th wheel a couple of weekend ago, temp was in the upper 90's if not over 100. I usually drive around 65 on the interstate with it, my tran temp sat just barely over 150. Lately it has been sitting just under 150. So I'd have to say yours is plugged or your T/C is slipping tremedously. All the research I have seen, once an aftermarked cooler has been installed, they rarely see anything above 140.
gotta have gauges..! no two ways about it...! i was EASILLY getting temps over 200* pulling a 10k lb 5ver in 90* heat... not much for hills... just couldn't keep the tranny under 200*... now i can pull in that heat... pull some steep hills and still keep the temp right around 180*.... that's running the ac too...!
At the cheap cost of aftermarket trans coolers, it seems like a no-brainer. Are there any sposors here that sell a direct fit? I don't know the size of the lines, etc.

To pull the grill you have to,remove the top screws, then look inbetween the bumper and the grill. You will see 4 clips, just lift on them alittle and pull out.As for the trany temp do know.
HERE is the one I bought, a Tru-Cool 40K unit. I removed the stock cooler and am runnng this one only. Dropped tranny temps considerably! I'm in AZ and used to see 200 degrees plus, now I rarely get over 160-170.
Get a Tru-Cool 40K tranny cooler and run it in series with your stock cooler or remove your stock cooler and run the Tru-Cool by itself. Drop your temps 30-40 degrees.
make sure the after market Trans. cooler keeps the Temp within range. To low Temps are as bad as high temps?
if you live in the cold part of the country in the winter months like i do, all you need to do is block off the airflow to the cooler... as for the tranny being too cold, i do not think your tranny will be adversely effected by running a little cold... my reccomendation is use sythetic tranny fluid, it flows better in the cold, and give your truck plenty of time to warm up when it is really cold outside... anybody here have more info on this than i do..?
