Ha ha! I almost fogot about those! My lil sis had a FWD cutlass with the 4.3 diesel. GUTLESS! It was good on fuel though. Gas station attendants were always yelling over the intercom "No! No! You're filling your car with diesel!" When I would borrow it I would purposely fill it up, just to screw with the attendants. I would say "Oh crap! You gotta be kidding me, diesel?" Then I would start it up and drive it away. Funny. You had to be there............

Nobody recalls the King Midget??

OOPS, wrong forum. Didn't have a GM engine, I think it was Briggs & Stratton.

I still drive my 85 2.8 v-6 S-15. Dog for speed, but pulls my firewood trailer great, with bed loaded too. Drips some oil & the clutch leaks, but other than that, you can't kill it. Has even survived my 17 year old's high school days.....Was just offered $1200 for it. I think I'll take it...

How is it unequal wear on the cylinders? The pistons still travel in the cylinders when the valve train is deactivated. The disabled cylinders after a couple travels up and down in the cylinders will just compress/uncompress the gases in the cylinder and there won't be any power lost (other than frictional losses present in the deactivated cylinders, which isn't much.) This also keeps the cylinders warm (compression of those gases still generate heat to keep those cylinders warm.)

I've heard of fuel keeping the fuel pump cool, but not used for cooling or lubrication in the intake itself. If the intake needs cooling, on some engines I've seen, they have coolant running through them.

I've owned 2 of these cars with functioning systems. I think this system is more misunderstood than anything else. I also have the factory manuals with the principles behind the modulated displacement if somebody want me to enter it (it's 3 paragraphs.)

Edit: I've owned a 4.3L V6 Olds Diesel. Gutless, and the engine I had was leaking diesel into the oil pan.

I had an 83 Celebrity with the 4.3 diesel. It was a company car and the engine never gave me any problems in 60+ K but everything else on the car broke. I talked to the second owner and they junked it at about 160,000 miles but it was because the rest of the car was worn out and not the engine. The 4.3 diesel was better then the 2.8 gas alternative.

I'm sure I'll get yelled at for this but my buddy works on a lot of cadillacs and the 472/500 motors boast a lot more than actually can put up. They seem to last all right but the power isn't there for the size. When i first heard of a 500 that 'Oh yeah' song from ferris beuhler went through my head, but overall they are dogs.
