I have to second that. But, I might be biased, since I own one.

The best gasoline engine ever is the 300 I-6, so it stands to reason it's the best Ford engine. It beats out most other I-6 engines due to the gear driven cam, rather than a chain drive.

As for most expensive to rebuild, Mazda Rotary. $4-6K is not uncommon for an investment in rebuilding. May only have 3 moving parts, but they're expensive critters.

I submit for your inspection that from a MILITARY point of view LONG LASTING is a huge consideration....

Gas engines may have a disadvantage there, because diesels just keep on going (if they are older generation)

~Strip off everything else from it, and what gets you home is all that matters...

Q: Can a modern diesel engine run without electricity?

300-6. Period. Will pull anything and still get you home on just 2-3 cylinders.

That's an entire different and damn good 2.3! the 2.3 HSC was a stand alone design and not related to the excellent Lima 2.3 in Mustangs, Rangers, Pinto's, Capri, T-bird turbo-coupes.

The 2.0/2.3/2.5L OHC "Lima" engines were never known for having a lot of power, but they made up for it by having long lifespans. Their only weak point is the belt driven cam/aux shaft. At least it could pop a timing belt without doing major damage to the valvetrain, just slap another belt on and go.
Amazingly, my 2.3L had the timing belt WAY off, and it still managed to run, just not very well.
The 240/300 I6, and the 2.0/2.3/2.5L OHC I4 both fall into the same heading. They are like a sore peter, unbeatable......

2.3 Lima 4s are like a stock 460.........not too impressive on power at first glance, but my, oh my.....The untapped potential that's there with a little work.
I have seen some 2.3s that were a little "warmed over" that could put most V-6s in the weeds without breaking a sweat.

Yes, Ford left a lot of untapped potential in both.
Funny thing about the 300 and 2.3L. Both were typically backed by rather tall gears, compared to most other brand engines of the same class. Yet somehow, they still managed to outwork their competitors......... While getting better MPG.

Modern? Last 50 years (OHV era) or all time?

I'm going with all time.

Towing: any modern diesel (not counting reliability)

Worst: Lincoln V-12
Slowest: Model T
