We took our '02 Escape back to Carmax because it developed a transmission fluid leak. I was very happy with the way this vehicle ran, before it was worked on. After they had the car for a couple of days, they contacted us and stated the car needed to have the transmission rebuilt, (?), and they were sending it to a Ford garage to have it done. After the rebuild, dead stop excelleration is far below par, more accurately put...it's a dog off the line. This car could light up the tires before they "rebuilt" the tranny.
Carmax, and Carmax says Ford states, there is nothing wrong with the vehicle therefore they do not feel obligated to attempt any repair. So I thought maybe I could find some other means that could cause this problem in here with a possible solution. Our gas mileage is down too as a result and with this spike in gas prices I really need to work this out.
Just as something "free" to try...have you disconnected the battery for 15+ minutes (or was that 30 minutes?)? This will reset everything just like when it was new. The computer will relearn everything such as shift patterns, etc as you drive. It could be that what it has deemed as normal after 10's of thousands of miles is out of whack now.
While Ford was playing around with the chip reflashing on the earlier Escapes, I've heard of several people say the reflash made the shifting smoother but they seemed to lose power. Nothing drastic as what you state though.
You might find out what ford dealer did the work.. stop by and see if they'll reset the KAM (keep alive memory) that will allow your computer to re-learn shift strategies...
It's also possible the new transmission is slipping.. that will rob a lot of power and gas mileage... however it should set a code and maybe show the check engine light...
I'm going to try the disconnect, but I don't think it is slippage causing the loss of low RPM power, because the engine just doesn't build up any take off RPM, then at about 10 or 15 MPH it runs normal... like kick it into passing gear and it hauls a--.
Some things that could be causing this are:
/sticking brakes.-may have been sitting with emergency brake applied and cable stuck in back.
/air filter dirty.
/check oil level or change oil and filter.
/Injectors dirty.
/not sure if dirty MAF in intake could be an issue as well.
/perhaps they disconnected a vacuum line.
