yes... a tire question (first post, too)

Hey guys,
just bought an '03 f250 (FX4, v10, etc...) and really need some new tires. I know that a 305/70/16 will fit, but what does that equate to in inches? Some one told me they thought it was 32" but they weren't real sure. Is there a formula to convert the sizes to inches?

I'm really set on getting some Nitto Mud Grapplers (33x11.50), but according to all of the fitment guides that is too big. What do I need to do to fit these under there? How much lift? Trimming? Spacing? Thanks for any help.

The 305's will fit and they are about 32.5 inches tall. You could also go with 285/75/16 which is actually a tad bit taller and will give you more even wear. The wheels on our trucks are 7.5" wide, which is pretty narrow for a 305/70/16 and in many cases leads to unusual wear and shorter tread life. The most I would reccommend is a 295/75/16, but there arent many tires offered in that size compared to the 285's and 305's. Either way you go the truck will look much better than with the stock 265's. Good luck.

32.8 inches....... standing size will be different to each manufacturer. I have 315's with a FabTech correction kit and use BFG's AT tires. I am not sure what the 250 will allow as I have a F-350. Rim width and back spacing determines the fit under your truck. Wide tires with a big side lug will require a lift, a more street type narrow width you might get by. Back spacing determines the radius or swing when your turning the truck.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that if you go to google and do a search for tire size calculator, there are many websites that give you the ability to convert metric sizes to standard.

Well, I was planning on getting new wheels anyways. How much backspacing would you guys recommend? I was going to get some black 16x8 Rock Crawlers, which I think you can get with different spacing. The Nitto's have pretty good size side lugs on them, so I figured that there would be some rubbing issues.

If you have a local 4-wheel drive shop near you the guys know wheels and tires for what your wanting to do. Many combinations exist and Nitto's never impressed me, people are monkey see monkey due. The hot tire right now for pulling a weight transfer sled is BFG's AT tire which for mud boggers will not work or rock crawling. Each tire has a unique use. 20's and Nitto's are for the curb jumpers in town around me and never see any off-road conditions. I ran into a guy with (unrelated) Nitto's on his super charged mustang. His friends all use Nitto's. A switch to Mickey Thompson ET streets and he was hooking up.

I've run P305's since 1998, both on my F250 (U code springs) and my current F350 (T code springs, go figure). There is very slight rubbing at full lock, but the power steering pump is screaming so you're not at full lock very long anyway. The tires are mounted on 16x8 Mickey Thompson Challengers (made by Alcoa). They have 4 1/3" backspacing which puts the wheels out just a bit further than stock. The stock rims were 7", the extra inch on the Mickey's is added on the outside of the rim. With this backspacing the tires do not hang outside the fenders at the top. I'm currently running Toyo Open Country A/T's.
