I believe there is supposed to be some sort of bushing on the steering column between the steering box and the fire wall.....I hope.... Any way, I currently have about 40 degrees of play in my steering, and I traced it to this one spot. I checked my manual and came up empty handed. Can anybody help fill in the blanks, and point me in the direction for a procedure to replace this? I am sick of driving like a drunk thanks to all the slop in my steering....I have a 77 150 2wd w/ 460/c6.
It's called the rag joint. It stops vibration from getting to the steering wheel. I loosen the steering colume and pull it up a little to replace the joint. You can also replace the rubber piece by itself.
do I do the same procedure to just replace the rubber? I think that is all that needs to be replaced. And I am going to sound stoopid here, but when you say loosen the steering column, what does that entail? I have a pretty crappy manual when it comes to the steering stuff.
Hey Friend, I was able to replace the rag joint on my 76 2wd F250 without moving the column back although that would probably make it easier. It has been awhile since I did it but seems like it wasn't to much of a nightmare. You can usually find those rag joints in the "HELP" section at most chain parts stores like Advance & Autozone. You know, in the isle where all the little red packages that say "HELP" are hanging. Hope this helps.
okay, I got the rag joint, and I have 2 bolts off....There are 2 other..."things", that are perfectly round (not wrench friendly)... They are part of 4 total "connections bewteen the steering column and the steering box. Where do I go from here? Remember, I am a noobie, and I have never done something like this before.
2x4 automatics have a slide joint on the end of the column ( 12 point nut holds it tight) that joins to the rag joint and stering box.
4x4's have a shaft with u-joints on it that joins to the column this too has a 12 point nut that loosens to remove the column.
oh its round. These two "bolts" are very round...I cleaned them up to make sure of it (then cursed and muttered to myself...so HOW am I supposed to get THOSE off?!?!?!?) These 2 bolts run parallel to the steering column and are part of the joint. I did see a bolt that appeared to be part of some clamp, and it is between the rag joint and the power steering box. I am hesitant at this point to touch that as I do not know what the consequences would be.
