Go by your local auto parts store and have the codes read. Most will be happy to do it for free hoping you will buy your parts from them. post the codes here and you'll get some help.

I believe emissions related equipment is covered by a mandatory 100k warranty, so if your trouble code happens to be from that your dealer should fix it. I'm going to test this with my wifes '01 Taurus, it has a P0401 insufficient EGR flow code. The annoying thing is that the engine light was on when her father bought the car (just before we were married). The dealer told him the engine light was on because of a bad fuel cap and it would go off real soon. Can't believe he bought a car from a dealer with a check engine light on. I was going to take it to a Ford dealer since it was an emissions problem but then the light went off. Now it's back on again.

Sorry for the rant, but the short of it is that you might still get the problem fixed for free. Just post the codes you get from the parts store, I know Autozone will check them for you.

Yeah try Autozone. Sounds like it might be an emissions related part. EGR's are kind of common. Just be glad you don't have a 3.0 and it tells you it's EGR but it could be a DPFE or O2.

Without knowing what the problem is, ie the code, nobody can tell you if it will harm it to drive it.

If it's the gas cap, wouldn't that be a quick fix by making sure the cap was on tight?

if it's only one day past warranty, the dealer may work with you on that.

Might also be a bad DPFE sensor... ford has a "service action" on some models which extends the warranty for the DPFE to i believe 72k/7year ( I know some tauruses and focuses are on that list.. i don't know about rangers)

good luck

(by the way if the code is "gross evap leak" then it's probably a loose fuel cap.. if it's anything else then it isn't.)

P0401 Doesn't automatically mean that you need an EGR valve. Most of the time it is a bad DPFE sensor. Look in the Technical Information topic at the top of the page and then scroll down to the Emissions section. Click on OBD II Codes and it'll take you to the various diagnostic codes.
