I am dropping my tranny and the transfer case is there has to be dropped first. Do I break it away from the transfer case side 6 bolts or the 10 bolts that are on the tranny side??? There is a cross member that is holding this piece up that I am talking about?? Tranny or case side??
Thanks Joe
P.S. Is a aftermarket torque convert seal better than a Stock Ford seal???

As far as dropping the transfer case.......Kwikkordead would be the one to ask. He got up close and personal with his a little while back. You might want to PM him.
The six bolts are the ones to take out. The part that is hanging beyond the crossmember. No oil will spill that way. The trans and the transfer case are individually sealed units with a spline drive in the middle. Get some help it's heavy. I wrenched my neck using the armstrong method. Was sore for the better part of three weeks.
EDIT;
Oh and this saturday the whole transmission is coming out for an updated clutch fork, throw out bearing, pivot and pilot bearing. No clutch though, it's still in too good of shape to justify replacement this time. This time it will be at the shop, on my terms, not in the front yard! My shop is simply too small of a space to have the truck tie up the entire work area to get something fixed. I have to plan ahead.

So how do you get to the top R/H (passenger side) bolts?? The heat shield are blocking??? I have losned the exhaust from the turbo and all the hangers and unbolted the H/S but can not get to the bolts.

Yes remove the heat shield. Once that's done you can get at it. I never loosened my exhaust.
Also don't forget to disconnect the linkage for the 4h 4l lever and wire for the indicator light. The linkage rod is on there pretty tight but a strong persuation with a big screwdriver at the right angle will disconnect it from the transfer case input lever.
Hmmm, I can't remember exactly, but it was kind of like doing a chinese puzzle. It did come out, even with the exhaust bolted up tight. I didn't have to bend anything either. You have an automatic? Mines a 6 speed stick and it's a little narrower at the bottom than and auto.
Yeah I see now that you have an auto. Hmmm, I'm still thinking that it came out from between the frame and exhaust. Not from between the exhaust and transmission. With your exhaust loosened up like that I'm surprised that it is stuck in there. I had plenty of room.
Well I will work on in the morning.
Like dad always said if it won't come out, get the biggest hammer you got...
Just kidding.... hahaha
Thanks
Well, good luck on your endeavors. Cookie88 told me that the motors are very nose heavy and must be supported with the trans out. Be careful on that or the engine will fall against the radiator. Not good.
There is a bubble on the tranny side that keeps it from sliding stright back. I'm thinking that thing need to be a 2 piece deal... Ah Captian Sawzall to the rescue... Bahahaha

Going on memory here again. You can separate the two halves right above the exhaust pipe. Remove the hanger bolt at that point and it comes apart. No need to cut if you want to preserve the heat sheild.
