One of my best friends just got a part-time job at the local UPS warehouse.
You start off at the bottom and work your way up. Starting salary for a driver is $22/hr here.
As a loader/unloader (part-time), after 5 months you will get full dental, health, retirement...anything a full-time career will offer. You will also get 25% off your Verizon phone bill, and big discounts almost anywhere from restaraunts to auto-dealers of any make, and any model they offer.
They offer a couple other things, but I forgot about them...
I know 2 guys in FL who worked for UPS. One started as a pt handler and had to work 3 jobs to make ends meet until he got hired on as a driver (took 3 years). He is still working for UPS and has a huge retirement portfolio and works the hours to prove it. The second guy worked for UPS 13 years and finally quit. He stated that he worked 70+ hours a week and no matter what they did, it wasn't good enough it seems. I am not sure if this is a fair statement but I do know you will be working from dark to dark six days a week.... if you call out sick - you may get fired. The pay is great and the benefits too but you will not have a life. Just FYI. So if you're a workaholic and have a wife/girlfriend it will probably be great.
I was told by a FedEx driver, they "own" the company, unlike UPS, as share holders. They come out of Lake Havasu City. While there are four UPS drivers serving La Paz County and Parker Az. Two alone just serve the town/county seat of Parker. The local UPS office is out of Blythe, Calif.
My county is sparsely populated in the "outback". Few small towns and not many named county roads. Alot of backroads to cover and to remember where everyone lives. Especially when all you have is a milepost and highway number as an address.
Two things: UPS hasn't taken cash for COD's for at least two years here, all the driver's were thrilled.
Second, UPS is a publicly traded company on the NYSE, ANYONE can be their owners. The UPS drivers are covered by the Teamster's pension plan, while Fed-ex company drivers hold Fed-ex stock as part of their retirement package.
FedEx Express retirement plan is both a traditional pension plan, and a stock purchase plan is available, as is a 401k with company match. FedEx stock is not part of the pension plan. Wish I'd bought more when it was $30 two splits ago.....
