starter removal

i have a 7.3 E350 (i know... not a truck... but i couldnt find any van forums )

anyway, im trying to replace the starter on it, and for the life of me, i cant get the top bolt out, its hard to reach, even from the inside of the van... i can get a small ratchet onto it, but i only got about one inch of movement, before it hits something... no way can i get the large rachet up in there...

so do i need a certain type of extention to get in there?

Not sure about your situation, but I've used an extension to get to the front of the starter, then a swivel joint and then another extension or multiples to get it clear of cross members or other obstacles (working under the vehicle) on various other vehicles. I'd also reinstall the bottom bolt and tighten it down until the top bolt was out (work with the hardest one first and so on). Not sure if this helps, maybe someone else has ran across this van job.

That may be more of a hassle than it's worth. Do you already have the heavy gauge leads removed? Should help a little. If you haven't already unhooked the batteries, do so, the heavy leads are connected directly to them.

I haven't looked at my starter, but if it's like most starter/solenoid assemblies, it may be more of a pain to separate then it's worth.

yes i have the leads unhooked already. my buddy is letting me borrow an 18 inch wobble extention, so that may help me get up in there.
