Turning AWD into RWD ??

Has anybody tried to turn an AWD Aerostar into a RWD? Looking at the transfer case, it seems that the tranny output and TC output to the rear wheels are in-line. If you removed the chain, clutch pack, etc. and put a straight shaft from the TC input to rear output, would that work?

I have a mechanical speedo sensor on the front output shaft assembly, so I guess I'd have to keep the chain attached. But maybe I could simply remove the front driveshaft? With the clutch pack removed/locked, I'd then get 100% power to the rear and still have a speedo.

Would the rear differential be able to handle 100% of the tranny power 100% of the time? Would the rear diff have the correct ratios?

Any/all thoughts appreciated!!

Robin

Seems to me that the best option would be to swap in a RWD transmission and drive shaft. Seems like it should be pretty straight forward, unless I'm missing something...

You still have too leave the front Diff in place as it is part of the front suspension.

the front differental can come out too. you would also take the half shafts, but leave the cv joint as it is also the front spindle. You could take some good measurement on the lower "a" arm as it is different from the two wheel model. if the two wheel model would fit the attachment points you would also need the spindle and hubs from the two wheel drive model ( a good donor car might help in the conversion). then change the transmissions and drive shafts.... On paper it works out ok. Let us know what you find.

Just take out the front driveshaft and call it done. That way, you can always put it back in when winter comes around (depending on where you live)

This is a full-time AWD system, not an on-demand part time system like a truck would have. If you simply take the drive shaft off without doing anything to the transfer case, the center diff in the transfer case will simply spin as if the front end were in the air. You won't go anywhere, unless of course, the t-case clutch decides to help out, in which case you'll probably burn it out quick. It would be like if you took one axle shaft out of the rear axle and then tried to drive (assuming you could still attach the wheel).
