I wonder if the springs were designed to give you the right caster without any shims, and the shims come into play as the springs sag???
You are rite they are, I found this in my 57 shop manual.
Quote, from the shop manual
Caster. The caster angle is controlled by the the angle of the front spring pads. The spring pads must be parallel to each other. Any change in the caster angle is due either to the axle being twisted, as the result of an accident, or to spring sag.
As these axles are not equipped with a radius rod, the caster angle changes as the load on the front axle increases or as the spring sag.
If the springs have sagged the caster angle can be adjusted by replacing the springs or by installing tapered shimes between the springs and the spring pads. An equal amount of shims should be installed on both sides.
Andrew, If your springs are not worn and drove good before you may not need them.
Its a factory axle thats been "dago'ed". This thing "feels" every groove in the road, I'm going over to the frontend shop this morning, let ya know what I fine out.
