Ok, before i get hounded by someone for askin a "dumb" question, I just dont know! I have a 1978 F250 4x4 s.cab 400, 4spd. I am tring to figure out which ffront axle I have- code shows "J". I have looked and can not find out anything but its power steering. Can someone help me out? Thanks in advance....
You won't get hounded here. We're a friendly bunch.
You either have a Dana 44 or a Dana 60. At least we have it narrowed down that far. The number is cast into the bottom of the diff housing. You might also be able to find a BOM number somewhere on the axle tube, it's 6 or 7 digits long. That will allow someone to ID it for you.
There are other methods that involve measuring various bits of the axle, but I don't remember them. A search might turn them up.
Ok, thanks. I'll go look again for the numbers on the housing. I was lookin yesterday and could not find them, but I'll get the pressure washer out and clean it better to see if I can find it.Thanks again!!!
If you can take a pic of the axle (knuckles in particular) and post it up we could tell you easily. 4 bolts in a square pattern holding the cap on the knuckle is a D60. Most likely you have a Dana 44 which will not use the pattern I described.
Thanks for all the help, I figured out which one I have. Dana 60 with 4.10 gears, Limited Slip. I really wish I still had my camera to take before and after photos and post them here! But all well. I'll do it the "old fashioned" way. Take paper photos and then scan them in. I just hope it gets done before fall. MUST FIND MUD!!! Thanks again for the help. This is my first 4x4 so I will more than likely have more questions later on.
